Low Heartbeat - 6/7 Weeks

hi all! I used the search box to see if anyone else has discussed this, sorry if I missed it....

Went in for my u/s today (my edd from pd is 4/11, would put me at 6w3d) and saw the little bean! Measured at 6w0d and only saw a flicker for heartbeat. U/s tech, nurse practitioner and RN said it was low (didn't give me actual FHR), may be too early and called for an u/s at 8w.

The nurse practitioner also said I could schedule my 12 and 16 week appts knowing we could always cancel them if the baby ends up not being viable. Great way to leave the appt!

Has anyone experienced a low hb at 6/7 weeks?

TIA

Re: Low Heartbeat - 6/7 Weeks

  • I have no experience, but I will say shame on her for saying that! Why on earth would anyone think it's okay to talk to a pregnant mom like that?!
  • Loading the player...
  • This recently happened to a friend of mine and we were both very nervous for her and baby. The tech said it may have just started beating. She went back the following week and the heart was beating away. I know it's scary but try to stay positive
  • I hope everything is okay. That's a pretty callous way for the nurse to talk to you... sorry you had that experience :-(

  • Thanks all! Definitely staying positive! Glad to see a bit of a flicker...

And looking forward to be back with my normal doctor in two weeks!
  • Yeah that was really awful of the tech

You can cancel if the baby is not viable? WTF

I have no advice but I hope everything turns out ok.

  • So sorry you had that experience. I can't believe he/she 1) actually said that and 2) didn't immediately apologize.
  • Hello! I can relate to you. I went in last week at 6w5d and the FHR was 87 and they let know it was low and I would need to come back in 2 weeks! I had some spotting so I ended up going in yesterday 7w5d and FHR was 144. They said it everything looked great :) just try your best to relax and not to stress!!
  • I went in at 7w2d and baby was measuring 6w4d and FHR was 113 which is on the lower side. Same thing happened with my last pregnancy (measuring behind and also slow HR) and turned out just fine. OB wasn't concerned at all this time either. Also returning for a f/u ultrasound in 2 weeks.

  • Thanks @aturpin13 and @medforthesoul ! Hoping for a similar result!
  • I hope everything turns out just great. But seriously that nurse was rude as hell...
  • I had the same thing at my 6w6d checkup. I wasn't given a heart rate but I was told it was low and needed to come up over 120. The doctor didn't seem too concerned but scheduled another appointment in 2 weeks, so I am going back this thirsday.
    *fingers crossed*

This discussion came up under another thread between me and someone else but it was never started as it's own thread. Glad you put it out there. Really hope everything works out ok!
  • I might be tempted to call back and see how low it was but honestly, the heart starts beating right around that time so really it could have been a day before, hours before, etc. so it's not odd that it would be low at this point. Good luck at your next appt.

  • When I went for my first u/s at 6 weeks, the heartbeat was a 104. The tech said it was low, but normal this early in the pregnancy. I have my second appointment Monday, so I will see if it's higher now.

  • Same for me. I just had my first ultrasound at 6w2d and the HR was 104. A little low but not worrisome unless it doesnt increase by the next scan.

  • I had my first u/s this week and baby was measuring a little small (I was 7w4d, baby was at 6w6d size) and had a heartbeat rate of 71, which is pretty low, but the rhythm looked good. My doctor said that he isn't worried and we'll check back in a few weeks. He said that younger doctors may make a bigger deal out of such a low heart rate. The heart may have just started beating, so this may be what l why it is a little slower - it should start to speed up soon.

Tia, Maybe you'll want to find a new Doctor & nurse combo? You'll be "best friends" by the time baby is born.
  • How awful of the nurse to say that! I had my first appointment at 6w6d, and we saw a flicker on the u/s. HR measured at 114,but my Dr said that's normal for being so early. I wouldn't be too worried, the earlier it is, the slower the hr will be because it's just starting. It'll ramp up in plenty of time.

It's normal that early to have a low FHT. Mine was low too at 100 at 5w6d. In a few days it can come right up between 120 and 160 so don't worry too much . If mine turns out to be not viable again then it is what it is. I don't think she was wrong to say that but I think she should have told you what the pregnancy's heart rate was. Do you have your ultrasound report yet ? It's common to have another U/S in 1 -2 weeks later to make sure it's developing as it should so you will have answers soon . It's super common and I'd say more often than not it all turns out ok in my experience and if not there's nothing you can do about it so worrying just makes it worse. Try to stay positive !
  • I'm in the same boat. Had my US last week and baby measured 6w4d with a heart rate of 94bpm. My OB said it was low but didn't say brace for MC or anything like that. I'm scheduled for a follow up US next Wednesday to (hopefully) see a nice, strong, NORMAL heartbeat. I've made myself sick reading medical journals about how long the odds might be so hearing success stories on here is really helpful. FX for both of us!
  • I would notify the doctor of what the nurse said to you. They need to be made aware that their staff said something unnecessary and extremely insensitive to a patient. I had a similar experience with my original OB with my first. The n.p. was very obnoxious and I ended up changing doctors. You want your doctor to be a source of information and gentle counsel. Hope the rest of your pregnancy goes smoothly! Fingers crossed for a more positive experience next time!

  • My doc doesn't actually count hr... he has done this so verrrrrry verrrrrry long... he does all ultrasounds himself and quickly says "oh yes.... u see the heart rate? It's good.... you feeling ok? Baby growing good see u in 3-4 weeks"
Lol he's very predictable. So its both good and bad he doesn't actually give u a number.
    good luck!
