My mom is paying for my crib and wardrobe and she actually just bought them today because we found a set we love and she convinced a salesperson to give her a good deal. BUT she has tons of space in her house (empty nesters) and it will stay there, in the box, probably until like Thanksgiving break at least, maybe not until Winter Break whenever she and my dad can come over and help set it up. I don't want it set up at my house too early.
There is no set appropriate time. Whenever feels right to you. Some people start as soon as they find out they're pregnant, others wait until 24 or 28 weeks. For us, we bought our dresser/changing table on a buy sell trade for a good deal so we snagged it. My dad just bought our crib because it was 60% off at pottery barn, I am 21 weeks.
We bought our crib during the pottery barn crib sale as well. After reading some older forum posts about cribs and furniture being back ordered I am very glad ours is already here. I guess it is when you are comfortable, but I'm aiming to be baby ready by December so I'm starting all the major purchases now.
I have the dresser already (it was clearance) but my crib is always ready to ship and has no wait time so my Mom will order it sometime in October/November and said that she'll put it together so if I'm already physically uncomfortable I won't have to worry about it. We wanted a rocker/recliner from LaZboy and we ordered that already since it'll come in handy during pregnancy as well. It's good to check if your furniture has a long wait time, some can take up to 12 weeks and if that's the case you may want to order soon.
I suggest ordering and setting up prior to 3 rd trimester. I waited last time and was too big to help comfortably. Luckily my husband and a friend were good sports and helped me out.
I've just been picking up the big things as they go on sale or I have coupons. But buy baby coupons are good on some carseat brands. I got my new chicco with a 20% off coupon.
I think it depends, too, on whether you are having a baby shower. I don't want to buy too much because I'll get stuff at the shower. My parents are buying us the crib and glider and I would like to have those before my shower on November 14. We are using a dresser we already have, so I would like to have the room set up so I can bring everything home from the shower and put it in the nursery.
I found a great used set on Craigslist normally $1300 for $350...changing table and crib. She also threw in an organic mattress, a diaper genie, two changing pads, and diaper genie trash bags. I'd say if the deal is right, go for it! But we are lucky, there are SOOOO many sales coming up with the holidays. We get the pick of the litter!!

Your crib already came?? They just called us yesterday to set up a day for the freight company to come set it up, which isn't until the 27th
We are getting a set from a nice baby furniture store and the salesperson said that they recommend ordering when women are around 20 weeks to avoid any potential delays. We ordered our set a week ago and it will be delivered in 10-14 weeks when I will be 30-34 weeks. At one point our set wasn't going to come in for 20 weeks (arriving a week before my due date).
Delivery times for Babies R Us furniture seemed to be much faster (weeks or days). If you are considering a particular store, it doesn't hurt to call and ask them about average delivery time.

We aren't buying a crib until he grows out of the bassinet we have and are using a dresser we already have as his plus a changing pad on top. We have VERY little room and don't need to be storing a crib for 6 months before he even uses it. I'm also not getting a glider/rocker so this cuts my 'nursery' purchases down to nothing but new bassinet sheets and a changing pad/cover. It's best for us right now, just adding a different perspective than the traditional nursery.
@laxdixdar oh okay I didn't know that was an option. My dad ordered it and I guess he was trying to be all fancy selecting white glove delivery lol. I'm kind of sad that we don't get to put it up though... Thought that would be a nice thing to do with hubs. I might ask the delivery guys if they could just leave in the box. I've never had anything delivered like this before. Am I suppose to tip? Now I'm stressed lol
We have everything bought. I know November gets crazy with the holidays and then we go right in the Christmas season. So with having to get gifts and everything else, I figured the baby stuff is one less thing to think about.
I would order sooner rather than later. We ordered our dresser 2 weeks ago and they told us 10-16 weeks for delivery, so I'm glad we ordered when we did.
@babybluu I recommend letting them do it... I've heard frustrating things about crib assembly and while I share the romantic notion that it will be "fun" and "special" to assemble the crib together, I'd put money down that our hubs do not!

My parents have a crib for us that they have saved for years. But my mom said that my dad is being superstitious and won't give it to us until November. Ahaha.
We ordered around 14 weeks because that's when we found one we liked. We hated all the ones we found at the major stores. Ended up finding one at a boutique type store. Glad we ordered it when we did because it takes 12 weeks to get here.
