Prenatal before 8wks?

My OB will not see me before 8-9 weeks at the earliest. I have seen that some of you ladies are well before that- but have had ultrasounds, or are being tested for hcg, etc. Just out of curiosity, what are the circumstances in which an OB will make the exception and start prenatal visits before 8-9 weeks? TIA!

Every physician and practice is different. My friend wasn't seen until 9 weeks because she did not have a history of miscarriages, she was healthy, she didn't find out until week 5 almost week 6 and her doctor preferred to get women in at week 8.

For me, my doctor just starts early. Im not high risk or anything. I called to start HCG before my missed period and she told me to come in that next week

  • My office has people come in for a confirmatory appointment. They give you a urine test and offer bloodwork if you want it as well. I don't go back in for my first actual prenatal appointment until 7 wks 4 days.
  • Mine does a pregnancy confirmation blood test before any real prenatal appts can be scheduled, so I did that this week at 6w2d. They give you your HCG level because it's what they're testing for in the pregnancy blood test, so that's why I've got mine! My first real appt is at 10w1d, for a full physical and panorama test. I don't get an ultrasound until about 14 weeks. I think most folks who have ultrasounds already have had fertility issues or miscarriages previously.

Also, remember this group has people due in all of April: that's a nearly five week range! So depending where you are, you could be 4-5 weeks behind someone else in your due date.

  • Yup, every doctor is different. My office doesn't see you until 8 or 9 weeks typically. They do give you an u/s at that time. They let me come in at 7 weeks and then I will go again at 9 weeks because of repeated losses. No HcG checks or anything at my practice.

And when you do see your doctor your appointments could be different as well. For example my first ultrasound was external and internal. Most of the women on the ultrasound thread only got an internal ultrasound at their fist ultrasound.

  • What everyone else said - every dr is different. I didn't see the dr until 8 weeks when I was pregnant with my son. This time around im with a different practice and they bring you in at 6 weeks to do a confirmation ultrasound.
  • My practice sees you for the first time at 9 weeks. I went in at 7 for an ultrasound because I had an ectopic in March and they needed to confirm the embryo had implanted.
  • My OB sees patients right away to test Betas regardless of history and first U/S at 6.5 weeks.
  • I was very surprised to go to my first prenatal visit at 5w2d. We did weight family history a pelvic exam and an ultrasound to make sure it was placed well. I go back September 5th for bloo work and another ultrasound. It's very interesting how different doctors.
  • That was the standard practice at my office too. They assumed I was further along than I actually was because they initially calculate your EDD based off of LMP, however for someone like me with a 41-45 day cycle on average, this estimate is completely inaccurate. So I was 6 weeks 2 days and they probably assumed I was closer to 8 when I came in.

  • I won't see my doc until 9w1d. They typically won't see you until after week 8 tho.

  • My OB doesn't see patients until 8-10 weeks, but brought me in early for an U/S due to spotting. Generally, if everything is good, they wait.. But if you've got a symptom causing you stress, talk to your OB/nurse- they may take thing case by case.
  • With my first i wasn't seen until about 10 weeks and my only US was the anatomy scan at. 20 weeks. The only reason I have been seen early and had ultrasounds is bc of previous miscarriage. If there aren't concerns, it's pretty normal to wait if there aen't signs of complications but if you really want something always ask!!

This is how my OB is as well.
