Milk Production is Weird

I'm a FTM and my little girl is almost 2 weeks old. My milk came in really well, and I was producing a lot, but I've noticed that some days I seem to barely produce any! My daughter's a picky eater and won't breast feed most of the time, so I've been pumping every 3 hours or so. Any clues as to what might be effecting my milk production? Is this a normal thing?

  • Yes, there are many factors that effect milk supply. Things like: stress, hydration, time of day, diet, supplements, and even some medications and foods can increase or decrease milk production. There are lots of things to consider when it comes to your milk factories. Be sure to stay well hydrated and eat plenty of good fruits and veggies and protein. Stay away from any mint family plant- they are anti-galactogogues. Trying to stay stress free is also a big key to keeping up milk production.
  • There are many variables, as listed above, but another is that breasts respond differently for a pump than baby. So, your baby may get out much more than is reflected when you pump. Do you have a local Le Leche League chapter? That would be a great place to go to get free help and lots of tips about supply, pumping, and working with your baby's frequency.
