FTM November baby winter gear

Im not sure what she all needs since it will be winter. Do I get nb size winter jacket and clothes and 3 months?! I just know her nb clothes won't last long and just trying to prepare ahead of time of what exactly to get. Thanks.

Re: FTM November baby winter gear

  • I think a lot of it depends on where you live.. What I need in Texas isn't the same as someone in Massachusetts.

  • I picked up a snuggly warm 0-3 size fleece snowsuit from Baby Gap a couple of weeks ago because they were having a sale and I was so excited to find winter clothes in a store! I'm in PA and expecting a snowy, cold winter. I'm also considering getting either a baby wearing coat or an insert for my winter coat to cover the baby while I use the ergo since I'm probably going to need it for winter/early spring dog walks.
  • I'm skipping the NB size, I figure that if baby doesn't fit into the fleece suit, a warm blanket over the car seat will be fine for getting in and out of the car for the first week or two. I may also get a Bundleme for the stroller or a thick fleece car seat cover.
  • They say layers are better so you can strip them off between indoors/outdoors. Most babies I've seen bundled up look too warm! But I also live in Arizona, so our winter highs rarely go below 40 degrees.
  • Thanks. I'm in MN so its record cold every year! Trying to just think on what to bring her home in
  • A fleece sleeper would be good for the car seat and then a warm blanket tucked over the straps once she is buckled in properly.
We have extremely cold winters here and I ended up getting a North Face fleece bunting for my daughter. So she'd be in her regular clothes, then the bunting, then a blanket overtop of her in the car seat.

Just wondering if buntings are ok to be worn in the car seat. Ftm in Colorado and was looking at a Patagonia one but wasn't sure if she could wear it while in her car seat?!

The rule for jackets in the car seat is to adjust the straps of the car seat to fit baby without the jacket. Then try baby in the car seat again with the jacket on, if baby with jacket fits without adjusting the straps the jacket is thin enough to wear in the car seat. Most of the puffy winter suits and jacket are too big.
Also when you adjust the straps (no jacket), you should not be able to pinch any slack in the straps.
For DS we had a thin fleece jacket and a warm blanket wrapped around him after he was buckled in. You can also put the jacket on they backwards after they are buckled in, but I found this did not work well for a newborn. The infant car seat is so helpful, so I could get DS all buckled in and wrapped up in the warm house then he was just outside until I got him to the warm car (love my remote starter).
The snow suits and puffy jackets are great for the stroller or if they will be outside for a while, but not for a car seat.

I live in CO and our son was born in January.
We never needed the bunting. I put him in a onesie, warm footie sleepers, and added a blanket when necessary. I used the car seat canopy when going from the car.
That being said the fleece bunting is fine for the car seat but I would not do the down in the car seat.

Layers work wonders here in south Texas, since during "winter" it could be 30 degrees in the morning and 70 by noon. Go Texas! X_X
  • Bunting isn't safe to use under the car seat straps.  There are some "shower cap" type covers that go over the top of the car seat to make a warm igloo, just make sure there isn't anything fluffy between the car seat, the straps, and the baby.  Here's an article that has a bunch of no's and a bunch of alternatives: https://csftl.org/hello-winter-good-bye-coats/

I ended up getting this (link below). As a plus, you can unzip the middle section once you get into the car and there's a lighter blanket sewn inside so the baby doesn't overheat in the warmer car.

  • I registered for the JJ Cole fleece car seat cover. Like a PP said, we plan to wear our little guy under our jacket with a baby wearing extender. That way he will stay warm with our body heat.

Got it. Thank you! Probably won't be purchasing one then.
  • I live in New York. I registered for lots of hats and blankets as well as a few sweatshirts and a bundle blanket for the carseat/stroller. I'm hoping the bundle blanket combined with a sweatshirt onesie and a hat will keep him warm enough.

Honestly, babies are hot boxes most of the time, and won't need a ton of extra warmth for short trips outside like to and from the car.  Get some hats and layering pieces that are relatively light (as PPs have mentioned, anything puffy is a big no-no for car seats) and pair them with a blanket or a car seat canopy.  And be sure to warm up your car for a few minutes beforehand whenever possible to minimize the amount of time Baby is actually in the cold.
  • I lived in South Korea with my first and we had some very cold days in the winter. For going out I followed the layering rule: long sleeve onesie, pair of socks, and a fleece one piece outfit. I would tuck a blanket around him to go to and from the car and once we were inside I would remove the fleece outfit and put on a pair of pants. For walks, I found the best solution was layering and putting him in my carrier with my jacket zipped over the top. If we were going to be outside for longer periods of time (we used public transpo a lot) I would use the stroller with bunting and layering or they make the fleece sleep sacks that have holes for the car seat straps.

Honestly, we rarely traveled when it was cold enough for those techniques so our go to was layering.
  • I live in Coastal GA so we have maybe a week of freezing/below freezing temperatures.  However, I can't resist buying hats with ears.  It's my obsession right now.  They're so freaking cute!

Oh I'm a hat with ears fan! We have a little white bear snow suit which we put on both our kids when we left the hospital. Will definitely be popping this one in it too! A teeny tiny bear :-)
  • Im planning on putting my son in one of these till its not cold anymore.

    OMG so freaking cute!!!

There is a pink one marked down to $12 at a local baby shop.  I want it so bad, but I'm pretty sure my baby would boil in it since November usually means mid 40 - 60 degree weather.

  • @VexedMommy, I'm mid GA and I'm having a hard time with the cute winter outfits! I know realistically that it's not cold enough for fleece until Jan/Feb, but that's not stopping me from wanting all the fleece lined sleepers with hoods.

The colder months where you are which is I believe 1-2 hrs away from me. Is mid jan - March typically. Some dec cold but not too bad but if you get the fleece sleepers just don't layer in dec. As for nov typically hoodie weather I wouldn't get any newborn fleece. 0-3 they probably can wear in Dec/jan. our worst part of winter is Feb and it can snow then. But ice is Ga worst enemy.
  • @Gapeach83 I'm from SC so I'm used to warm weather except for the month of Feb typically, but then again the summer has been so bad this year, that I'm just crossing my fingers for a very cold winter. I bought 0-3 and 3-6 heavy winter and NB light winter. DS1 was in NB for 8 weeks, so that might backfire on me, but oh well.

my second was bigger than my first. Both still in NB for 4-6 weeks. March last year was still really cold it happens here even had a blizzard in march 12 years ago. Parts of sc especially closer to coast are warmer than here. The weather doesn't make sense half the time here. We had snow one day and 2 days later wearing short sleeves in march. Heavy 3-6 Would Probably Work.
  • @Gapeach83 Coastal SC is very warm usually, but last Feb there was an ice storm that knocked our power out for 4 days! That was a total nightmare with a toddler.
