Super anemic at 9 weeks

Hi yall!

So I got my initial blood work done a few weeks ago and I was on the boarder of being anemic but my midwife wanted me to meet with a hematologist anyway. I met with her last week and and my numbers were pretty bad. I'm now taking iron 3xs a day along with my prenatal.

I feel so tired, like more than just first trimester tired. My question is has anyone else been in this situation? If so, what if anything can be done for all the tiredness? Also, what did the rest of your pregnancy look like?

I meet with my midwife and hematologist in a week and plan on asking them these same questions but I just want to know others experiences.

Thanks!

I was just diagnosed with iron-deficient anemia last week (at 7.5 weeks). My midwives have me taking Feramax--it's pricey (~$70 for 100 capsules), but it's the highest dosage you can get and it's supposed to absorb well.

The best thing you can do for your tiredness is get your iron levels up! Maybe it's a placebo effect, but I already feel way better now that I'm taking the supplements.

I read that it shouldn't impact the rest of the pregnancy too much. Baby takes iron first, then you get it second. So your health is actually a greater concern. The potential side effects are low birth rate and prematurity, and it can be harder for your kid to get enough iron later in life.

But honestly--just do what you can, and that's all you can do! :)

I've been on iron since before my pregnancy, the goal was to keep my hemoglobin in the 9's. I just found out my last labs show it at 8.9 and my ferritin is still at a 2 - I'm waiting for my hematologist to return from vaca next week but the next step is a blood transfusion because IV iron is not recommended in pregnancy.

I've had it. Eat iron rich foods along with vitamin c rich foods. Don't just depend on the supplements, improve your diet/nutrition.
  • I've been living on iron rich foods and vitamin C since March and my numbers continue to go down, I don't think you get as much iron from your foods as people think.
  • Keep up with the iron supplements as well as the bit C. Also calcium can inhibit iron absorption so careful with that intake. Cooking all of your food in a cast iron skillet helps as well.
