38w3d:FTM Induced tomorrow, what to expect?

According to last weeks ultrasound my ob/gyn is telling me I am currently really in my 40th week and my baby is approximately 9 lbs+. I do not have high bp as of yet, but I am inching my way there. No GD either. Last week she wanted to induce me via membrane sweep, but baby was too high and cervix isn't ripe. Today she checked me out again, baby has shifted lower, but not low or ripe enough for a sweep..however tomorrow I am scheduled to be induced because of my bp, possible large baby and the fact that my face and everything else is beginning to swell..I've had a general unwellness for a week and a half. Also, I am not dialated at all. This little big guy doesn't want to come out( I don't blame him!) Ob/gyn did not inform me of the type of induction to take place (and taking in all of this my bonehead didn't even ask) so I am curious if anyone is able to tell me of the possibilities.
All I know is that she said I am scheduled tomorrow morning at 7:30 AM, I will not be showing up to be induced and then going home to wait, I am to stay at the hospital and the baby has to/will come out tomorrow (or whenever he is ready to rather).
I have read multiple threads here and sèen some of the possible induction methods, but most seem to allow you to go home until the real action begins. What are the possibilities that would keep me in hospital?

  • I didn't realize you go home when induced. I have heard with pitocin some people go rather fast. Not sure if that's what they are doing with you? I personally would rather stay there and wait incase. You can always walk around and do things until the epidural which can help move things along too.

  • The only type of induction that I know of that you can go home afterwards is the membrane sweep because that doesn't necessarily mean you'll go into labor that day. All other types of inductions, Prostaglandin suppositories or pills, Cervidil, Foley bulb, Pitocin or having your water broke require you to stay in the hospital.
  • I've heard of some drs inserting cervadil and letting mom go home until contractions start or it falls out. When I was induced with #1 they started my induction at like 930p at night with inserting cervadil then had me "sleep" (I was pretty uncomfortable, crampy and anxious) they removed it that morning and I had progressed enough that they started pitocin next.

  • I haven't heard of women going home after being induced either.

I had to be induced at 39 weeks with my first child and I showed up at 6am, was given Pitocin at 8am and then waited, and waited and waited all day long for my body to do its thing. The doctor wanted to break my water at like 2pm so he gave me an epidural at that point. My 9 lb son was born at 12:30am the next day. So 17 hours after starting the process and 3 hours of pushing, he was born. It was long and tiring but a pretty "average" induction birth I would say.

My second child was almost born in the car because she came so quick and after 30 minutes of active labor, she came without time for an epidural. Very different births!

Keep in mind that weight estimations are just that. Estimates. Your LO could very well be much smaller than they are predicting.

  • If you are nervous and have questions then talk to your doctor.
  • You can't go home as they will likely use pitocin given by IV as others have stated. I don't know about those who have stated baby comes fast after that, not my story. I had 19 hours of labor, 4 hours of pushing, then an emergency C-section. The pitocin did make my contractions come on more regular and more intense. Every birth is so different.
  • I asked to be induced with my second and third baby. Due to knowing they would be another Big baby. But I was over my EDD. I got induced through pitocin. I wasn't aware you could go home either. I was hooked up the bag etc. my labor was only 2/3 hours after starting it. It was fast and easy deliveries with no epi

Had this with my first. They applied it. I stayed at the hospital for a bit then went home and came back late afternoon. They applied it again and I immediately started contractions. It was nice to go home and rest. With my second they immediately broke my water and started pictocin.
  • How did everything go? Hope you are doing okay!
