2nd Trimester

Bacteria Infections & Regular Antibiotics During Pregnancy

I've been on a round of antibiotics each month for the last 4 months. I'm now 22 weeks along and my doctor called today and is now putting me on PNVK for 7 days and Nitrofurantoim Mono-MCR daily going forward. Doctor reassures me that this isn't uncommon and that the benefits of antibiotics out way the risks. Logically I know antibiotics are needed, but I hate having to take them and I worry about long term effects on our little one. Any other pregnant mamas experiencing a similar issue?

Re: Bacteria Infections & Regular Antibiotics During Pregnancy

  • Yes I needed antibiotics during both pregnancies for dental work. Take them. It's better than infection that can get out of control, lead to sepsis and/or pre-term labor (PTL).

  • I did have a bacterial infection when I was pregnant with my daughter. It was DX around 10-11wks, I did one round of flagyl I believe, and they never bothered to recheck for it again after that point. I took ABX during my pregnancy with her for Bacterial Bronchitis as well, that was around 28-30wks. She is now a healthy 4 year old. My GP who was formlery an OB chief, assures me that a lot of what OBs consider "risky" is really fine, but because there are no extensive studies showing one way or another (because no companies want to study pregnant women) they just err on the side of caution and say that everything is a potential risk to baby.

I do not have any experience with long term ABX during pregnancy, but I know if untreated bacterial infections can cause PTL, so I would imagine it is much safer to treat it.

  • I had antibiotics before I knew I was pregnant. I had a really aggressive UTI and was given trimethoprim, which isn't safe during pregnancy because it blocks the absorption of folic acid. However I'm now 20 weeks and baby is absolutely fine. Definitely agree with first poster, you've got to consider the risks if you didn't take them. During pregnancy your immune system is already compromised so antibiotics are often a necessary evil. Just be aware of things like thrush which can flare up after a course of antibiotics. Best of luck xx
  • I've been on four rounds of antibiotics: pneumonia, UTI #1, pyelonephritis aka kidney infection, and UTI #2. All were over 10 day courses because I'm allergic to PCN and would react to the "standard" safest meds for these conditions because they are all derived from PCN or so structurally close an allergic reaction is a huge risk. So, I took substandard antibiotics for all of these conditions and had to take multiple rounds to clear the infections.
Trust your OB; like PP said the last thing you want is to become septic because then the infection will cross the placental barrier as it is in your bloodstream and will put your life and your little one's life at risk.
Also, I had the blessing of getting recurrent yeast infections after the antibiotics so be on the lookout for that one too!
