Breastfeeding around the clock today

I know we've been getting a lot of breastfeeding questions and I was going to call LC today and didnt (may tomorrow). Our day started at 5am and LO did not go down until 2:50 pm!! We went through feed, poop/pee, hang out for a few, repeat. She slept here and there while feeding. Is this considered cluster feeding still?? I mean I couldnt even keep track of how often we fed today. I barely got a chance to eat, which I then proceded to cry over and told Arya that if Mommy didnt eat something she wasnt going to have good nutrients for her (bc LO could totally understand what I was saying). So, we nursed again around 6pm today after finally going down and now shes kind of down again but staying with me bc she seems to be rooting here and there, so I offer for her to nurse and she will for a couple minutes and then back out. Any experience or advice?? I shouldnt complain bc she is feeding so well and I dont mind other than being tired, but I wasnt sure if this is just going to happen again tomorrow.

  • I went through this a couple days ago . LIterally felt like I couldn't get off the couch with him. It just happened to be that one day. Now we're back to every 2-3 hrs , he's 9 days old. Not holding my breath as I'm sure it will happen again ha

  • Yep, that sounds like cluster feeding to me. I have been there the last 2 nights. 11:15 pm to 6:15 am seems to be go time for Hope. I'm super thrilled about :( I always keep quick snacks around my nursing stations for moments like these.
  • Hang in there mama! You're doing awesome:)
  • How long does she feed for each time? I've been feeding on demand but she will sometimes only feed for 15 min then fall asleep. The longest I've gotten her to feed is 30 mins. But she is only 4 days old right now.
  • Its normal. Short feeds frequently is the best way for your baby to signal to your body that she needs more milk. Some babies will stay latched for a good chunk of the time, and others will snack repeatedly for hours on end and unlatch in between. We just went through 2 days of it and my 13 day old is now sleeping straight through when it usually is starting so I'm hoping I may get some sleep tonight... Time of day doesn't really many a difference to them, so the cluster feeding can happen whenever though a lot of babies end up doing so in the evening or early morning hours.

When we have been feeding every 2-3 hours she will feed anywhere from 25-45mins. During todays craziness we started off early with about 40 mins and then it varied. Some would last a while others would be 10 mins. No matter what she wanted to be touching Momma though, almost like so she knew when she was ready she would be in the area!
  • Thanks everyone! We experienced cluster feeding in the hospital, but it was short spurts before my milk came in and it was for about 3 hours only. Today just took the cake with that 5am to 2pm window. I cried while I made me a smoothie, DH went back to work today since he was off a couple days last week and he felt horrible trying to calm me over the phone. Oh good times, good times.

@breezymeema7 you are a freaking rockstar...cluster feeding all night and running after toddlers all day?!
  • @SashaDenn25 thank you, but I'd be a lost cause if it weren't for H right now. I'm terrified of the thought of him going back to work in a few days.
  • I've been doing the same thing yesterday and today! He gave me a break last night, but he's been super clingy and wanting to eat all day.

Tell me about it...this happened this morning on DH's first day back to work so I probably had a bigger break down than I would have had if he were home to help even if it was just sitting there with me.
  • I'm dealing with the same thing. Our last 5 hours have consisted of LO latching for 10 mins, falling asleep, waking up as soon as I move and screaming, latching again and repeat. He finally fell asleep, fingers crossed he stays out for awhile and gives me poor boobs a break.
  • Could she just be comfort nursing part of the time?
  • Well ladies cluster feeding was apparently a success, my supply doubled. When I was pumping after each session before I got about 3oz total. Today I got 5oz and that was one side bc she decided to nurse from my right the entire time. So glad to see physical results after a crazy day.

@gmd88 I thought so at first, but she was actually nursing the entire time, so I think her body was just trying to signal my body to make more! Lol
  • Experienced cluster feeding last night and today but it's seems we have calmed down a little bit now heading into our third night together.
Trying not to loose my sanity!
  • My advice would be to try to keep the little one awake while you are feeding so that you can make sure she is getting a full feeding and will not want to snack all the time. Try to aim to get at least 15 minutes on each side at every feeding. I have had tremendous success with this. Good luck!
  • Cluster feeding is so hard, but totally worth it supply wise! Keep up the good work mamas!
