Migraines ?! Help

hi I was just wondering if anyone else is suffering with migraines during pregnancy I will be turning 12 weeks tomorrow and at first I was not getting a single headache I suffer from migraines for a very long time so I was very pleased that it was just all day nausea no appetite etc. but now that those symptoms are going away since I'm entering the second trimester...here come horrible migraines!!! If so other than Tylenol what else is safe to get some relief help!!!

Re: Migraines ?! Help

  • Ugh so sorry you're dealing with this. I've had a couple of headaches this time but last time I had two or three truly debilitating migraines that had me in bed all day. The worst!! If you're in the second tri you might want to check with your doc to see if excedrine very sparingly would be ok. Tylenol obviously does nothing.
Are you having caffeine? A cup or two of coffee or even a Coke might also help slightly. Ice packs on the head sometimes help me not necessarily cute them but offer interim relief. If they are frequent I've also heard of people trying acupuncture. I haven't done this but would definitely be open to trying if nothing else is working.

  • I'm sorry to hear about your migraine. I experienced the worst migraine of my life last week and am around 11 weeks and 6 days. I called my Obgyn and she suggest I go in a dark room. I also find that placing a cool cloth on my head or even patches that are meant for aches and pain extremely helpful. Just breathe and take care of yourself. Also, be aware of what you eat, my migraines are usually triggered by something extremely sweet or cheese...hope you feel better!
  • I too suffer from horrible migraine, have had them for over 20 years.. my ob told me I couldn't take my regular meds, only Tylenol.. I've been using ice on my forehead and over my eye on a dark room to help, she also suggested putting hands and feet in warm water while putting a cold compress on the back of my neck. Said this supposedly helps reduce the blood flow in the brain that causes the migraines... Haven't tried that suggestion since I haven't had one since my last appointment (knock on wood!!!). Hope you feel better! Migraines are the worst!
  • My OB prescribed a migraine med that's safe during pregnancy. I forget what it's called, but it's a mix of acetaminophen, caffeine, and something else. Way better than Tylenol (but not as good as my regular meds). Talk to your doc about it.
  • You could also check with your insurance to see if they cover chiropractic appointments. My dr with my DD gave me a "prescription" for weekly massages (because of migraines) that my insurance then covered.

Sorry you're experiencing this, hopefully your doctor can give you some advice as well as the ladies on here. I've never had bad migraines fortunately but cold cloths on your forehead and dark rooms may help alleviate your symptoms a bit.

yesterday I had a migraine and didn't even know it!  I have had a dull headache for the past few days.  I didn't think much of it until yesterday I started to lose my vision, and had numbness in my hand.  I had no idea what was going on, and my Dr. suggested I go to the ER.  Apparently I was expierencing an ocular migraine.  This would have never crossed my mind as I barely had a headache.  I'm sorry you ladies are having to deal with them hopefully they are few and far between.

  • You can ask for Fioricet - that's the Tylenol/caffeine prescription that is safe.  You can do a little more caffeine than normal - I do 3 cups of coffee on days I have a migraine - one more every once in a while is not going to hurt baby.  Peppermint and Eucalyptus essential oils (one drop mixed with coconut oil, rubbed onto painful spot) helps a lot.  You can also do an ice pack/frozen peas on the back of your neck while you are soaking your hands/feet in warm/hot water.

  • I have a prescription for Fioricet if I get a migraine while I'm preggers. I get "silent" migraines, much like ocular migraines they are less head pain and more funky vision, numbness and slurred speech. The very first time I experienced one I thought I was having a stroke and rushed to the ER. I bought mini cans of coke at Walmart the other day so when I get a headache I can take a couple Tylenol and drink a little coke. That usually helps it a lot.

  • I've been having them so bad, starting with aura that grows until I couldn't see, then the excruciating pain sets in for hours. My doctor gave me Midrid when helps a little but not enough for me to function. Good luck girl!
  • My doctor suggested magnesium sulfate, which is taken every day. I did not start taking it as my migraines have subsided significantly with my morning sickness, but you might want to ask your doc what they can prescribe you to help. Usually migraines lessen as you enter the second tri, so getting more definitely warrants a call to your doc for some med help.

I've had a couple ocular migraines while pregnant too! I've never had a single migraine before pregnancy, and like yours, my headache wasn't bad but my vision was messed up! I thought I was having a stroke...so scary. Have you been able to identify a trigger for yours?
  • Migraines, tension migraines, & cluster headaches here with auras, beautiful spots in vision, and vertigo complete with nausea with no relief with anything that doesn't knock me out (cant do my combo of flexeral & Tylenol 3's when trying to care for a four year old). They are sending me to a neurologist at the end of the month but more then likely mine is a genetic issue that there is nothing they can really do to fix or stop.
