swelling post partum

I was on iv fluids for several days during and after labor. Then my feet and legs started swelling. Worse than when I was pregnant! The nurses said it's to be expected, but now 5 days after baby it's still bad. No relief even from putting my feet up. :( any body else experienced this? Any ideas? Thanks!

Re: swelling post partum

  • I was soooo swollen for days after birth! Now I am 11 days post partum and my ankles are back! It should start to go down for you within the next few days I would think.

  • I was very swollen, like scary swollen for almost a week after my buddy was born. It gets better. One day you wake up and it is all gone.

My feet are horribly swollen...I feel like they could burst open. My lactation nurse said that it can take up to 2 weeks to go down. With my first 2 it was about 5 days. But we are 7 days pp today and they are awful. Just keep reminding up as much as possible and drink plenty of water. Maybe even have SO rub them to help the water go up the leg. That is what my doula had us do during pregnancy. ( With my 1st 2 , when the swelling went down I went to the bathroom and I swear I peed for 5 minutes straight! )

  • I was never swollen during pregnancy however my ankles have swollen after delivery. Delivered Monday and by Thursday the swelling is subsiding. Drinking LOTS of water ( 64 oz per day +) and peeing every couple hrs.
  • Thanks for the encouragement y'all!!

This exactly. I thiught it'd never get better then bam, back to normal.
  • My doctor said it takes 6 weeks for swelling to disappear
  • Drink, drink, drink. I received a lot of IV fluids as well and was swollen for about 5-6 days PP. Keeping your feet elevated above your heart helps also. It is completely normal and will subside soon.
  • I didn't swell at all during pregnancy, but had horrible swelling post partum. I worse ted hose and drank a ton of water in about a week the swelling went down.
  • I have never been swollen During pregnancy until after delivery then my feet blew up like balloons. It took about 2 1/2 weeks for them to look normal.
  • Best advice is to drink water.  I had severe swelling prior to delivery and after. It made me so mad because I could barely lift my legs they were so damn swollen.  Anyways I know it sounds crazy and I thought it was ridiculous advice but the nurses encouraged me to drink water.  So I was downing at least 70+ oz of water daily.  I also ate plenty of watermelon (natural diuretic) With that I peed like crazy (of course) and three weeks later my swelling is gone.  Oh and keep your feet elevated!!! :)
  • I had it for over 2 weeks after delivery!!! It hurt to walk! Water was my best friend though! Drink plenty of it and try to keep your feet elevated.
