WWYD - Switching OB's

Hey all. I just found out our Dr. will be moving at the end of the year so I will have to find a new OB to take over my last month of pregnancy.

Quick backstory: At our hospital it's not guaranteed to have your Dr. at delivery if they aren't on call. We saw Dr. M for my whole pregnancy with DD but went into labor on a holiday weekend so Dr. B ended up delivering. I also saw Dr. B for my 6 week post check as Dr. M was gone again.

Fast forward to this pregnancy, we are back with Dr. M and have seen him once. My appointment today and my next one in September were/will be with someone else as Dr. M was/will be out (again.) As I was setting up the rest of my appointments I was told starting January 1 I have to find someone else for the last few weeks of my pregnancy. In total I will have 6 more appointments with Dr. M.

My question is: Since I have to change for the last month, would you just look for a new OB now to build a longer relationship with them? I love Dr. M but it almost feels pointless to continue with him if there is no chance he'll be at my delivery and there for the end and most important parts of my pregnancy. WWYD??

Re: WWYD - Switching OB's

  • I moved from NYC to Maine. I just switched OBs (I'm 20 weeks). Switch was really easy - love the new OB's office even better. I would switch now - get any hiccups with switching out of the way sooner rather than later (I imagine the new doctor would want to have the next few months with you, I have no idea, but some doctors might not want to take you on with 1 month left). Also, regardless of how great Dr. M is he probably has a lot going on outside the office right now. I want someone who is super focused on their job and patients!

I would switch to a smaller practice with more opportunity to see your own dr at each appt. unless there is another ob in this practice you know you like. Either way, switching to a new practice or just drs in the same one, I would switch sooner rather than later. Just my preference though, do what works for you.
  • I agree with PP I would rather switch sooner rather than later! Is Dr. B available to switch to (if you liked them that is)?

  • Is Dr. B in the same office building? My old practice had three offices and any could deliver your baby. If Dr. B is in the same office building and you liked Dr. B would the office let you switch? Also switching offices depending on your insurance/office could make it so you have a lose in money, I have already reached my office copay max for pregnant mothers but not my insurance copay max. I just switched prepregnancy and it is easy but now I will be delivering at a different hospital, had to because my husband now works for this hospital, and I would love to be with my old doctor as I had many issues with birth and later in pregnancy and it's nice to have people who already know you. Even if it's not the same doctor, I would be happy with the same US tech and nurses.

I did call Dr. B a few minutes ago and she could take me on in November so looking at finishing 2 more appointments with Dr. M and then moving. Thanks for the input! I kind of figured I'd switch as soon as possible but just needed some more reasons to do it since we love Dr. M so much.

  • Yes, switch now and get comfortable with a new Dr asap! I had to switch over around week 10 due to my old OBGYN retiring from delivering. I found a new OBGYN near me, saw hime once, and actually felt more comfortable with another Dr. in the practice. Now I'm set! Best of luck to you!

  • Also, if Dr B is in a different practice, you should send over your records in advance and have them take a look. My new OB does as her standard many more tests than the old one, so this week (week 2 of my switch), I was playing catch up on testing!
  • I would change obs now if I were you. In fact, I just did a few days ago. I have sch and the on I was using got on my nerves. I know the risk of misscarriage, even though the risk is minimal now. But at every weekly appt he would mention it over and over before checking the heartbeat. I just got sick of it and it was making me a mess
