I miss working out.....anyone else?

Before I got pregnant, I would workout 5-6 days a week, usually early am around 5:30, then a walk with the dog, then i would go to work. I didnt always eat the best but I stayed in shape. Right before I got pregnant I was really trying to get healthier with my eating since for as much as I workout i should look like i have no body fat and be a swimsuit model haha, close but no cigar.

Anyways, ever since about week 5, I have not been able to workout. I tried going to the gym one afternoon, and I sat on the bike for 5 mins and then I was hot with almost cold sweats and felt sick. (I realize now what people mean when they say your body will tell you when something is too much) So I headed home. Everyday since, I have managed to at least walk 1 mile or so with the dog, but it leaves me so tired, and I have no energy for anything other than a short walk let alone some squats or weights. I can barely manage to get ready and go to work some days, and once home im tired hungry and ready for bed.

I know most things say if you were working out before, you can do it now, and I really wanted to stay working out and eating healthy but I have a feeling these next few weeks, its gonna be short walks and lots of bread and bad things. Does anyone else feel like this? Anyone pregnant before that had this issue, how long before you felt good enough to work out again? I know without working out for a month or two my body is going to loose some of the muscle I had built and get out of shape, but I figure thats ok.

  • This is me exactly!! With my first pregnancy I was able to run/workout almost the entire time. With my last baby and now this one it's a no-go. I do the same exact thing. I want to work out so bad but end up just sitting there or dragging because I feel sick and tired :( I am hoping it passes soon so I can get back to exercising regularly.

  • Same here! I was previously working full time, walking the dog when getting home, going to Bar Method classes 4-5 times per week & then eating a small dinner and crashing. Now I'm starving & exhausted after work so the dog gets priority and Bar classes pushed to the wayside.. I'd rather eat dinner & relax! Hoping next week will be better and for you too :)
  • Ditto! I went from 4 days a week down to 2 and it's definitely not an intense workout anymore because I have no stamina these days :( it's worth it tho
  • Same same same!!! 5 lb weights feel like 25lbs... I do feel like cardio helps with the nausea but I get super winded so quickly!!
  • Just do what you're comfortable with for now. Your energy will come back in a few weeks and you'll be able to have better work outs again. Good job doing your best to stay active!
  • I was doing pretty hardcore workouts 3-5 days a week (lots of spin, barre, rowing, weight training). I have had to cut back to 2-3 days a week and I just do the best I can. Some days are rough, and for 1 week I ended up leaving 2 classes early. But I feel like that is better than nothing.

I also have the opposite of morning sickness. I feel the best in the AM, worst in the PM. So I have been trying morning yoga classes instead. I also always eat a snack and drink lots of water.

I also tell the instructors beforehand that I am pregnant so they can make suggestions on modifications.
  • I haven't been able to workout at all but I am kinda enjoying being lazy, I just wanted to stay in good shape and thought how easy it would be to eat healhty and workout the first few weeks, boy was I wrong haha

  • I was a bikini competitor for the WBFF pre-pregnancy. Well, that's gone to shit. So o completely understand where you're coming from. I'm still trying to feel well enough and find the motivation at almost 8 weeks.

  • @cclow87, ok good to know I'm not alone!

  • Not alone! Im so sick and nauseous i cant even walk the dog this week! I have a prenatal yoga dvd and a barre dvd ready and waiting for second Trimester energy! I dont feel guilty at all for resting right now. My fertility specialist advised nothing high intensity for me until after 17 weeks. I miss my daily workout though, but i know this is not permanent.
  • I'm there too. I was weight training hard, 6 days a week, Friday's I would work out twice, yeah, not any more. I've been averaging twice the past couple weeks, even then I'm having to rest twice as long between sets. I thought about starting yoga to work on my core strength and keep that up, but I have no idea where to start with that.

  • I'm so sick I'm scared to work out because I'm not eating.  I miss it and I miss the excuse to do something healthy for myself-especially now that I'm not eating much

  • I get tired faster and out of breath when I work out now. I do crossfit 3-4 times a week and I try to keep up with it, but I can feel I have way less energy. Apparently, the energy all comes back with the second trimester, so it should be okay soon. Enjoy being lazy for the time being :)

  • Don't worry! Just be proud of yourself for what you manage TO do. Thats how I have to handle my weeks. I used to workout at least 5 days a week, and now if I can workout 2-3 times a week, great. If none at all, oh well, I'll try to do better next week. I'm hoping that once/IF my MS goes away I'll have more motivation to workout. Right now though, my motivation mojo is at an all time looow :(

  • I do! I am absolutely too exhausted to do my favorite zumba and yoga classes.  After my 15 min walk from the train, I am winded and exhausted and I sleep.  So, I've been trying to do some gentle yoga in the mornings if I have time.  I can't wait for the 2nd Trimester energy boost!

  • Me too!  My muscles are cramping and getting tight because I haven't been able to workout in over two weeks.  And I used to train every day!

I had really bad m/s for a week or so, but now the VitB/Unisom combo seems to be keeping the nausea at bay, but I'm exhausted!!  I thought it was the unisom - so I stopped it for 36 hours.  1) I was still exhausted, and 2) the m/s came back with avengence, so I'm back on the combo because at least I'm not sick!

I did do a 10 min walking youtube video today - I had to force myself to do that, but I'm glad I did.  I did some stretching afterwards.  My plan is to do light activity now - keeping it short and adding time little by little.  Hopefully by the time my fitness gets back, my energy will be back too!

  • I miss being able to breathe when working out. I've still been able to get myself to the gym and yoga, but I'm only giving it 50% maybe since my nose is so stuffy!

Dude, why didn't anyone warn me that I wouldn't be able to breathe out of my nose for 9 months?!
  • You're right to listen to your body! I would keep it up with the light exercise... you may feel better in second tri (or sooner) and be able to do a bit more soon!

  • I feel the same. I'm so tired to do much of anything and going to a fitness class makes me breathless. I'm trying to get in just a walking workout on the treadmill tomorrow
  • Did my first workout in two weeks today because I was feeling pretty good. I am used to weight training two or three times a week and cardio and boxing the other 3 days a week. I was out of breath after 5 min on the elliptical today!! OH and I have been stuffy since Saturday and thought it was allergies? Is that a symptom I was unaware of?
  • I am only about 6 weeks but I've noticed a change in my work outs. I lower the intensity but I do find I'm getting winded a bit easier. Take it easy for now and listen to your body like you said. Hopefully you'll feel great soon and will be able to be more active! :)
  • Not in the slightest :)) I'm team high activity - low exercise, but way to go for your dedication ladies!

  • It's good to know so many others have the same issue... I used to do 3 days of HIIT training and have to cut it down to two and feeling completely exhausted between sets. Planned to do low intensity cardio 2 days a week and even that seems impossible. All I want to do is lie down all day and eat. Hope this changes soon.. I'm not ready to gain 50lbs with the pregnancy...
  • Do the best you can right now, first try is survival mode. When you start feeling better, slowly work your energy back up. Very gradually!

  • Oh I am so happy I found this thread. I am in the same boat! Before comcieving I would do bootcamp 3-4 times a week and also weight train and sometime run or cycle. Since week 6 I have been too sick to do much of anything. In 3 weeks I've done weights twice and went to 2 bootcamp classes that I barely made it through! I'm slowly starting to feel better so I'm optimistic I can start to get back into it but the lack of exercise coupled with all the Carb loading I've been doing is making me feel like it's going to be hard to get back into a healthy routine! I think you just have to do what you can and not push yourself too hard. This won't be the time for personal bests! I also told my bootcamp coaches because they are always hard on me and I wanted them to know why I was backing off and taking a lot more breaks. I'm really hoping the 2nd trimester will bring me new energy and less puking because I miss getting my sweat on!!
  • I do crossfit 5 days a week and boy has it been a struggle to get my butt there. I keep telling myself it's good for the baby. I stop if I feel pain and take more brakes between sets.
