Uterine Fibroids?

I just had my anatomy scan and I was told that I have uterine fibroids. This kinda freaked me out. Does anyone have any experience with this? It's worrying me quite a bit!

Re: Uterine Fibroids?

  • I'm a FTM and was told I had 2 large fibroids. I immediately freaked out but was told it shouldn't effect the baby right now bc of where they are located but I will most likely get more ultrasounds later in my pregnancy to make sure the baby is growing ok bc it can possibly cause issues later in pregnancy. Did they tell you anything about if it can cause issues in your pregnancy?

  • I guess they said it depends on the location of the fibroids and the size. My midwife said that it can get in the way of baby's decent and would cause you to have a c section. Also they said that it could cause excess bleeding after labor. I don't know the size of mine or the location so I have to go back.

  • I found out during the dating u/s for my DD that I have a half dozen - 2 are quite large (largest 8cm).  The only concern was if the largest one stayed near my cervix (was pressing against it during my anatomy scan) or if any were to grow during pregnancy (none did).  The largest one ended up in the upper left part of uterus by 3rd trimester.  One of the smaller ones is embedded in my uterus wall where a c-section is normally done, so I was told that they would need to make the incision slightly higher if I needed a c-section (I did not).

My stomach did measure about 4 weeks ahead (why I had 3rd trimester u/s), but baby was perfect and not impacted at all.  I had a vaginal birth at 39w after my water broke, and my DD was right around the 50th percentile in size.

This pregnancy, the largest fibroid is no longer there -- we're not sure if it died or shrunk or left during labor with DD.  My stomach is only measuring 1-2 weeks ahead from the smaller ones.  I have had 2 early losses which may have been due to my fibroids (trouble with implantation), but that's not something for you to be concerned about this pregnancy if you're already far enough along to be having your anatomy scan.  Just something for future reference.
  • I have a ton of fibroids that have been there since before getting pregnant with my first child. I've since had 2 normal, healthy pregnancies and now have 2 kids. Ask you doctor if you are concerned.
  • I just also learnt that I have uterine fibroids. I'm constantly in pain, but my doctor said they should be okay and shouldn't affect the baby.
I am worried that if they get too big by my delivery date that I MAY require an emergency C-section.
