March 2016 Moms

I hope I'm not crazy! (baby moon)

DH & I just got the option to go to Costa Rica in October (19 weeks) all we have to pay for is flights which are SO cheap!! Going out of the country (US) though my mom is super worried about me eating & drinking (water) there. Anyone else who went out of the country while pregnant before have any issues?

  • We travel a lot. I don't know much about Costa Rica, but generally when you travel to places where you shouldn't drink the water, you should also skip salads and vegetables that aren't cooked or peeled. Oh and ice!

  • You need to talk to your doctor. My boss went there on her honeymoon and got several vaccinations before going. I never have gotten any extra vaccinations before traveling outside the US, though, so I don't know if she was just being overly cautious or what.
  • I went to Costa Rica (Guanacaste and Manuel Antonio) for my honeymoon and didn't need any vaccines. We drank the water at our resorts and it was completely fine. I realize your concern though with being pregnant. I would feel the same way. Definitely talk to your doctor and do some research. I don't know if this is stupid but maybe reaching out to a travel agent for more info specifically on CR and the food/water safety there?

  • DO IT!!!!
I went to Italy at 20 weeks with my last.  It was awesome and I didn't have any issues.
Enjoy every moment of it.  Nothing can prepare you for how much your life is going to change.
  • When I went to Costa Rica, we had to get vaccinations, although we weren't staying in a resort. We were on the western side of the island which is not touristy, but we didn't have any problems with water or food.

As long as you're staying in reputable places and are mindful to drink bottled water, you'll be just fine.  Costa Rica isn't a 3rd world country - I didn't need vaccines to visit and it's generally safe and clean.  Unfortunately, if you're pregnant you may have to skip some of the really fun activities there - zip lining, surfing, intense hiking, etc. - but it's still a lovely place to visit!

We went to Panama when I was 20ish weeks pregnant with my 2nd and it was totally fine and we'll be going to London and Paris with my daughter this time at about 20 weeks as well.  And really - do it now before you have kiddos and traveling with them internationally becomes a much bigger endeavor!

We have traveled to Mexico when I was 5 months pregnant with our first to an all inclusive. You have to watch the water and ice, and fresh vegetables / salads like a previous poster said. I have gotten sick in Mexico 2 out of 4 times and both times I thought it was the fresh salads. So definitely watch what you are eating and drinking. Outside of that, I think you should be fine. And I'd still check with your doctor to see if any other precautions are needed.

Edited: Forgot to mention that we'll be doing the same thing this time around, just going to Jamaica instead.

  • Do it! It will be awesome. Relax and enjoy and drink plenty of bottled water.
  • The middle of pregnancy is the best time to travel!  Your bump isn't too big yet and you are not feeling sick like your first trimester.  We went to Canada when I was about 20 weeks during my last pregnancy.  This time around, I'll be in Chicago for work around the same time.

As far as water goes, same as what people have said, just drink bottled water and no uncooked stuff. I would avoid seafood as well.  Can you just imagine yourself sipping on virgin margarita on a sunny beach?  I surely can!  Have a great time!
  • Thank you so much for the advice everyone! I'm going to speak to my doctor but we have officially booked! I'm so excited just hoping I'll feel much better than I have been. Migraines, sore throat, sneezing ugh!
