Birthing classes helpful?!

My mom insists I need to take a birthing class to learn how to breath and push..I'm undecided my fiancé says we don't. Have yoy taken them and found them helpful. I've read a lot on the labor process and it gives me anxiety so I almost feel like not taking one may be Better for me. Any help is appreciated!

Re: Birthing classes helpful?!

  • I signed up for hypnobirthing. This is my first baby, but I think it will be really helpful, especially since my husband isn't as informed as I am on the process and is anxious. In my opinion, it's important you and your birth partner- whether it's a spouse, fiance, boy/girlfriend, or even your doctor if you're going alone- are as informed as possible on what's normal, so you can make sound decisions.

In think the classes also have less "in this rare and scary instance" than the interwebs does, which is another reason I'm excited :)

I think there was just a pretty long thread on this with a lot of info. I would try reading through that one.
Birthing classes tend to give a bunch of information about what is happening in your body during labor, which, if you aren't as familiar to the process can help give you some idea of what to expect.
    Eta: words suck today.
  • DH and I are taking "Bradley method" classes, and we love them! Definitely an opportunity to prepare yourself and start investing in your baby/family early on
  • I think the past thread had a lot of good information.
My husband got a lot more out of the class then I did and he did not want to take it. The hosipital tour was the most valuable part for me. My class was taught by a couple nurses, they were very good at explaining the process without making it scary. If you are planning to BF that class I highly recommend. I had read books on labor and BF before both classes, but learned a lot in the BF class.

We are too! It is the best money spent! I love how confident and educated we both feel and prepared for any situation! The bond that it helps create between us and the baby also feels so special and exciting. I would really recommend looking into it! IMO not enough people put emphasis on educating themselves for birthing and just assume the doctor will handle it but being informed is your responsibility to you and your baby.
  • I attended classes when I was expecting kiddo1.0 (it was part of routine care, everyone goes as a matter of course) and DH and I will be taking classes next month for this LO. The hospital tour was incredibly valuable, and I'm finding myself increasingly anxious at the moment that I haven't yet had a chance to visit the birthing centre. I also feel that I need DH and I to attend together so we're on the same page. We've discussed a few things about a birth plan but we need the class as a catalyst so we have information at our diaposal to make decisions. DH also "doesnt do hospitals" so I need the class to help him feel a little more at ease with the place.
  • @MargaretC5 , What did you get out of the breastfeeding class? Our hospital offers a 2 hour BF class during pregnancy but I wasn't sure what I could really get out of it (aside from what I'd already read in books) before the baby arrives.  I was just planning on working with the lactation consultants after the baby is born but was a little torn about it.
  • My husband and I found the birthing class to be super helpful. It was a full day at our hospital and it was packed with information. I already knew quite a bit of it from talking with my OB and all the information we have received through the hospital but it was nice to have a day to focus on just that topic. I agree that it was great to see L&D and get a sense of where you'll be giving birth.

The BF class I took was taught by a Lactation Consultant. She talked a lot about her experiences with new moms and the common mistakes and issues she saw. She also talked about myth vs facts of BF. She left a lot of time for questions it was good to hear what other moms were thinking and her responses. That was the one class that I really found helpful even though I had already read a lot on BF and the topics of the other classes. The LC was obviously very nervous talking in front of the group, but her experiences were much more helpful then a book (I read articles written by other LC but this topic I did just find more helpful in person).
It also really helped get DH on board with BF, he supported me before the class but only because he knew it was what I wanted. He never knew anyone that BF before. The class really helped him understand and see the benifits.

This so much. The class help me better understand holds, ideal time to pump if storing for working moms, and DH to understand that I'm going to need snacks and water etc. It prepared me for knowing that I needed help (kiddo 1 had latch and suck/swallow issues) I saw an LC bi-weekly for over 2 months before moving to just EPing.
