Fenugreek to build up milk supply

edited August 2015 in May 2015 Moms
I am planning to go back to work in December and let my husband take the remainder of my parental leave. Originally I was planning to stop breastfeeding after 6 months, but I've enjoyed it so much I can't bare to stop. Especially having to go back to work I will crave to still have a strong bond with DS (also I like when the in-laws are getting to grabby with him I can just claim he needs to eat and take him away). I've read a little bit on fenugreek to increase milk supply and was wondering if anyone has done this in order to build up a big storage of milk to keep in the freezer? Also what was your experience like taking this?

  • I took it briefly. Not sure if my supply increased due to the fenugreek or it was in my head lol as far as side effects though, you WILL smell like maple syrup. It was horrible for me! DH didn't mind at all but definitely noticed it too. I couldn't stand it.

I'm not sure if it helped me because I started taking it within days of DS's birth and have struggled with supply since. My LC said that if your urine and sweat starts to smell sweet like maple syrup, it means it's working. I have heard that sometimes it can lower some people's supplies. I've stopped taking as much as I used to because I got so sick of the syrupy smell it made my body emit, lol.

If you want to keep BFing when you go back to work I think pumping at work is your best bet.
  • Every time I take it, I wake up really full the next morning. I think it totally works.
  • Here's what I've done to increase supply:

    Coconut water
    More Milk Plus Drops
    Oatmeal/flaxseed in smoothies
    Power Pumping

I'm an exclusive pumper and when I was 2 weeks pp I was only getting 11oz/day and had to supplement with formula. Now at 12 weeks pp, I pump 6x and get over 40oz/day and usually freeze 10-12oz and has been this way for nearly a month.

    Good luck!

  • I've been using fenugreek for the last few days along with lactation cookies and I haven't seen much of a difference. I've heard from some that see a difference within 24 hours and others in a couple weeks.
  • I used it and it seemed to help. My LC said if you don't see a difference after a week then it probably won't work for you.
