Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

VENT: Just got the bill for my D&C

This morning I found out how much I owe for my D&C ($1000+). I can't say I'm shocked, but I thought my insurance would cover a bit more. As if the physical and emotional pain aren't enough, we now have to deal with another financial burden. I was literally in tears looking at the number. I'm sorry for rambling and complaining; I am just so frustrated right now. Why did this have to happen?? Life can be so unfair. :(

Re: VENT: Just got the bill for my D&C

  • I am so sorry - maybe it was coded wrong and if you call they can fix the mistake?

  • That is terrible I'm so sorry! Can you call your insurance and ask about why more wasn't covered? It's like getting kicked when you're down :(

  • Most of it (over $800) is for the general anesthesia. The procedure itself was less than $200. I don't know if it's worth me calling them and getting more frustrated/upset. I just hope my next pregnancy doesn't end the same way. It breaks my heart to have to spend so much of our money on things like this.
  • I'm so sorry :(  I have pretty good insurance through my work, but I also had to pay over $1000 out of pocket for my first D&C.  I had a second one about 6 months later, and for some reason it was only $600.  But I know exactly how you feel. I logically understood that that I would have some medical bills to pay, but it just feels SO UNFAIR to go through the worst experience of your life, then on top of it, to get a bill in the mail for $1000!

I do think it might be more expensive because of the anesthesia.  Apparently some doctors still perform D&C's while the patient is awake.  As much as it sucks to pay the extra money, I do think it's worth it not to be awake during the procedure.
  • I am SO sorry. I can't even imagine paying for my care after I got my miscarriage. Every single experience and test I had was horrible. To pay for them would have felt like an insult. One of the times I am thankful for our Canadian medical system even though the care can seem abysmal sometimes.
  • I wish I could put that $1000 toward a nice weekend getaway for my husband and me, or retail therapy, or ANYTHING other than what I do have to spend it on. All I can think is, "I never asked for this." I know that doesn't change the fact that I need to pay the bill... it's just salt in the wound.
  • I feel your pain, I had a $400 copay that day and I am sure more medical bills are on the way! I also thought the same thing: I didn't want this, I am going through enough to now have this financial burden when money is already tight..sucks...
    I am sorry.. :(

  • I am still waiting on insurance to process the hospital portion of my procedure since I met my deductible and my procedure was may 8. However, I got my OB portion already and owed $800 on just that. I called to set up a payment plan and when I told her how much I could pay, she said it will take a long time to pay off. My daughter will be 3 in a month and I just paid that same office off from having her in February, what I am paying for the d&c will be paid off in 16 months. I told her I figure bills from them will be rolling in for awhile because I hope to be pregnant soon. Her response? Well hopefully not too soon so you can pay this off first. Excuse me? Everyone else at that office is so nice and understanding and know me by name because I have been there once to twice a month since April, but not that billing lady.

That is seriously the most rude and insensitive response I've ever heard. I'm so sorry you had
    To hear that.
  • Well, now we have met our deductible and any medical stuff for the rest of the year we only have to pay 10%. I was hoping my delivery would be the thing I had to pay 10% on, but instead I had to pay for the d&c. It sucks that our bills are so high. It is nice to have a place to be able to rant. Sorry for your loss and the financial cost it has added to your open wound. :(
  • OMG. So I checked my insurance claims again this morning, and it turns out the $1000 I already owe did not include the claim for the actual surgery, which will probably be an additional $1200. :(:(:(
  • I am so sorry! :(

  • Wow! My general anesthesia after insurance was only $50!! That's insane!! I met my deductable of $500 already before the procedure so everything was 10% after that...

    What is your deductable?
    Dec 2014 - CP
    Feb 2015 - No hb 8wks
    July 2015 - CP

January 1, 2016 - CP. Heartbroken and feeling helpless. :(
July 2017 - Finally!! FINALLY!! Our GORGEOUS baby girl was born on 7-15-17. Miracles do happen!!

  • My deductible is $2,000. X_X Not every claim is applied to my deductible though (curse you, insurance industry, for being so darn confusing), so I'm still $600 away from meeting it... totally insane.
  • That sucks! So sorry :( Last thing anyone should have to worry about when going through such a rough time. Keep that chin up! xo

  • I was shocked at the $723 for mine this past week. I'm hoping I don't get a separate bill for other things like anesthesia.

  • I had to pay $400 that day and am getting a bill for $1300 for the surgery, I am also fighting with my insurance company as the Dr charged $1450 and they denied the clame stating that I had no coverage that day which is BS because they were 6 claims from that day and they all went through so now they have to resubmit and I have to keep fighting with them. Also the chromosomal testing done on the baby is with a company that is out of network, so who knows how much they will charge for that..it is so unfair that apart from the emotional pain we have to worry about these bills! Ugh..

  • I feel your pain! I think this this type of procedure should be covered 100%! As if it isn't enough emotional damage, you are stuck with the financial damage as well. I had my first miscarriage last year. The dr didn't get all of the tissue out with the D&C so they had to do it again! Do I had 2 procedures in 1 week! The financial burden was astronomical! I even faught some of the charges because I feel this should have been done right the first time. They denied it so I was stuck paying over $2000. Such crap! Hang in there! Usually they will let you make payments! I just paid the minimum until it was laid off.

  • Omg that is the worst, @jlinke926! I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I know it sounds absolutely terrible but if I end up getting pregnant again and miscarry I hope it happens this year instead of in 2016 so I'll meet my deductible and most of it will be covered. :(
  • That really stinks. I'm still waiting for the bills from my d&c on July 15. We have a super high deductible and are out of network right now so we're paying an absolute ton. :( It's like salt in the wound for sure.
