1 cm dilated and 50% effaced -3 station

Im 33 weeks and 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced -3 station. Is anyone else? Did anyone else have effacement early with their last pregnancy and deliver early?

Re: 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced -3 station

  • I found out at 34wks exactly that I was 50% effaced but not dilated. I'm curious to see what other posters say! Had my appointment today (34w5d) and dr. didn't even check me. Said it was normal at this point.

At 33 weeks I was 1cm dilated and 50% effaced. I'm 37 weeks tomorrow and today I was 2cm dilated and 90% effaced, the OB said the baby is very low, but I don't know my station. FTM. The doctor told me it's no indication of when I'll go into labor, and my cervix has changed a little each week since 33 weeks. Our bodies are getting ready for the big day!

Edited to add that I've been having contractions on a daily basis and I think that's why my OB has checked my cervix each week.

  • I'm the same way! They didn't seem too concerned about it, but I guess you never know!
  • I'm 37 weeks and have been 2cm dialated for a weeks. I'm now 80% effaced as well but they just checked effacement for the first time Tuesday so not sure what I was a few weeks ago or for how long. Curious to see what STM's might say.

I haven't been checked this time but with my second I sat at 4cm 60% for 2 1/2 weeks until I was induced. I don't think I'll be getting checked this time since your body can stay the same up until you're in labor.
  • With DS I was already 1cm when they first checked me at 37wks, but ended up inducing at 41 weeks. My SIL had nothing at her 37wk appt and then had her baby 3 days later!
    You never know!

  • With my twins I had pretty much no cervix for the last couple of months. They were born prematurely but I was thankful I made it as long as I did.

  • I was never checked with my first until I was in triage during labor, and it will be the same with this little guy. These numbers don't mean anything, you can be cm dilated and effaced for weeks until you give birth.

    This.
  • I was 3 and 50 at my 36w appt with baby 2...37w-39w 3 and 80 until I was stripped and had him at 39w6d
  • If these numbers are not really indicative of when you'll give birth in the weeks leading up to delivery why do they check? I'm at 37 weeks and I haven't been checked yet and I am nervous about it because I heard it can be painful and cause bleeding. My midwife has never mentioned checking and I'd like to turn it down if they offer unless there is an important reason for it.

    This.
Exactly. With my 2nd, I was 5 cm for weeks and she was 10 days overdue. I was in no discomfort or anything. I finally had sex with my husband and 2 hours later went into active labor contractions 2 mins apart and she was born 10 hours later.

They do it to keep track of your progress and where baby is and in what position it's more for them to get an idea of what's going on than to tell you baby's coming on this day at this time, but everyone changes differently. Like I've been 1 cm dilated for 3 weeks and it could stay like that for 3 more, or it could speed up, whereas you could be completely closed until the day you go into labour that is why it's not an indicator. If it makes you feel any better I get them weekly (they're worried she might flip back to breech) and they don't hurt and they haven't caused any bleeding for me, it's uncomfortable for a few seconds and it kinda makes me feel like I have to pee but it's never been painful!
  • I was 80%, 2 cm and baby fully engaged don't remember stations with my first before 33 weeks and she was induced a day after my edd. This time I've been dilated since31 weeks and still pregnant at 36 (tomorrow)
  • I'm a FTM at 38 weeks today but went from nothing last Thursday (8/13) when I have an appointment and got checked to 2 cm dilated and 50% on Tuesday (8/18). My doctor said that was pretty good for 5 days and to keep up the good work, aka having sex (haha). But not to get my hopes up cause your body/baby will do its own thing when it wants too!

It isn't necessary and many women choose not to be checked. Some practitioners (like mine, and it sounds like maybe yours) don't check routinely until active labor or your EDD. Here's the truth. One doctor can check and say you're 3, and another check and say you're 4.5. It's not a science, they're just using their fingers and making an educated guess. When you are checked, bacteria can be introduced. It is painful for some women. The information is not reliable or valuable. Most of the time it just makes moms anxious, as you will see daily on these boards. I recommend skipping it.

Thanks! I was skimming through this thread about to ask the same thing. I'm almost 38w and haven't been checked yet. My doctor is pretty chill about a lot of things, but it's still nice to hear not everyone is getting checked!
  • I see a midwife, and they do not do any of these cervical exams, unless there are issues. There is no point in knowing how much you have dilated or effaced, unless you are past your due date and they will need to induce. I hear that it is very uncomfortable to get checked, so I won't be checked until I go into labor
  • I would choose to NOT be checked because it either gets you excited or leaves you frustrated plus it's not fun having someone's fingers digging around up there. The only reason I've been checked this pregnancy was because of preterm labor.

I was checked today for the first time after I had the swab for Group B strep. I am 2 cm dialated and he said my cervix is still pretty thick. Baby boy is measuring a week ahead and his estimated weight is 6 pounds 8 oz. I'll be 36 weeks tomorrow.
  • Just saw my OB today. I'm 38 weeks, 4 days. She's says I'm dilated 1cm and 60% effaced. When she was doing the exam, it was very painful.
  • They checked me at 36 weeks since they were doing the strep test anyways. It didn't hurt at all. I turned it down at my 37 week apt. My 38 week one is tomorrow and I haven't decided, I know it means nothing but I feel like I'd feel better if I knew my body was making some progress towards labor. ..just a weird mental thing I guess!
  • I've had bleeding since being checked this afternoon and contractions since my ultrasound. They are still about 20 minutes apart. The weird thing is I am barely dilated and about 60% effaced.

  • I'm 37 weeks today. Saturday I was 3cm and 50% effaced. Doctor didn't check me yesterday at appt....I will be getting induced next week.
