PSA: Don't wait to call the doctor! *trigger warning*

I get weekly pregnancy updates from the AlphaMom blog. They're a great mix of helpful and hilarious. Today I got my 32-week update, and I felt the need to share, because I've seen so many posts lately where ladies are unsure whether or not to call their doctor. To sum up: when in doubt, call your doctor. Trust your intuition. Don't worry about bugging them, they've seen it all before, and that's what they get paid for.

Here's the post, but I think this comment from a L&D nurse really drives the point home:

*trigger warning*

-------------------------------

As someone who used to work on the L&D Floor, please don’t wait. Yes, the Mom-Who-Freaks-About-Nothing may be slightly annoying, but she is a Million times better then the Mom who’s 8 months pregnant, doesn’t feel her child move for 3 days, but doesn’t call because she didn’t want to “be a bother” – your heart breaks when she walks by, crying, hand in her husbands, knowing she’s about to spend 15 hours in labor so she can bury her child. DO NOT WAIT. Be a bother, be a royal-pain-in-the-ass, be annoying. Call 50 times a day. Whatever it takes to make sure you’er okay and you’re baby is okay. Even the annoyed nurses would rather that then a child in danger.

I agree with this even though the nurse my husband spoke with yesterday seemed annoyed by our question.

(I've been having a persistent cough for almost a month now. Comes and goes throughout the day. It's annoying me! The nurse told my husband to get me some cough drops and deal with it.)

  • Thanks for posting this, @leighann1. It was great timing for me today, because I just got off the phone with the triage nurse at my OB's office. I started having menstrual-like, cramping pain low down and near my cervix, this morning while I was at my office, but it was regularly spaced (lasted 20 seconds, came every 90 seconds, for over an hour). I figured it was probably over-exertion and dehydration, but called anyway. After being home with my feet up for 30 minutes, I feel a bit better, but am still having BH contractions. So who knows, but between this article and the kind and attentive triage nurse, I at least don't feel silly for bringing it up.

  • I am horrible about going to the doctor... I mean BAD. But if my baby is involved you bet I'm on that phone and booking an appointment. There's nothing more important than protecting him and if a couple nurses get annoyed, I'm sorry to say that "frankly my dear I don't give a d*mn." I had greatly reduced fetal movement and the doctor and nurses all made sure I got in for testing asap... when they saw he was fine it was relief I saw from them, not annoyance.

Thank you for posting this. I feel like a lot of mamas, especially FTM's need to be reminded of this more.
  • This happened to me last week- I called in due to cramps and back pain- thought it was dehydration... I went into pre-term labor! I was in the hospital for days trying to get contractions to stop since I was only 31 weeks! Now I am on modified bed rest since I'm dilated 3cm and 50% effaced. Call the doctor- don't wait ever.
