Needing a little encouragement :( - cervix not changing

Oh boy. I know that most of you decline cervical checks, and now I understand why. I'm 39 weeks and STILL 1 cm/50% (same as I was at 36 weeks). I'm really hoping for a VBAC and feeling exceptionally discouraged at my chance of going into labor on my own. For those of you who have had previous babies, have had your babies already, or are about 39 weeks... Did you go into labor on your own with a relatively closed and long cervix? Am I reading way too much into the fact that it's not changing?

Emotionally I'm not sure I can handle another csection; I went through a deep depression with my first csection and I'm terrified of having to deal with it again. I just need a little encouragement if you were closed until labor - or grounding/preparation if I'm simply unlikely to go into labor on my own.

  • This is EXACTLY how I feel... It was emotionally devastating to have an emergency csection last time. And my hospital doesn't like to induce for VBAC.. I'm praying when I go to my appt tomorrow at 39+6 that I am more than 1 cm dilated as I have been at that point for the last couple weeks...

I'm a FTM but at 36 weeks I was told I was 1 cm and cervix was 'softening' but no effacement. At my last appointment no change, I'll be 39 weeks on Friday and I'm pretty confident I'll porbably still have no change :-/. I'm getting pretty upset myself. If I haven't had any change on Friday inwont know how to handle it. So I sypmthaize with you and your frustration, I wish I had some encouraging words for you but all I can say is I'm in the same boat and your feelings are valid. Just hang in there :)
  • I was hoping for a VBA2C but since I'd been induced at 39 weeks (3.5 cm/80%-breech baby so c/s) and 40 weeks (closed up tight, failed VBAC) respectively (for pre-e) I was getting pretty discouraged since I wasn't progressing. At my 39 week appointment (on Tuesday) my cervix finally showed some change and I was 1-2 cm/50%. I was still pretty worried but I went into full blown labor Thursday morning by 10 am. Start to finish ~5 hours of labor and 30 minutes of pushing and I got my VBA2C. Good luck! I truly hope you are able to get your VBAC.

  • I know how you feel. I've been hoping to VBAC and I didn't get checked until 40 weeks and I was 1 cm and only softened. Then I had an ultrasound where I found out LO flipped breech. Now unless she flips back I'm having a CS and I've been going through all the stages of grief because I really wanted a vaginal delivery. My OB was willing to let me go until 41+1 before inducing me with pitocin and with how uncooperative my cervix was, I have been discouraged too. I'm crossing my fingers for you that your cervix becomes more favorable. Since your LO is head down, you have a better chance of dilating then I do with baby feet sitting on my cervix. Good luck!

  • I went into labor with my first and was only 1 cm dilated.

  • Honestly my doctors says that dilation
has nothing to do with when baby is going to come. You cervix being open is not what makes labor real contractions are the big deal.
You can be closed right up till your in full blown labour and then bang you start to open. Just try to relax Moma baby will come when baby is ready.
  • I'm a FTM, but I was 1 cm, 50% effaced and softening a bit at my 39 week appointment. At 40 weeks it was the same, but I went into labour naturally at 40w6d and had my baby at 41w. I hope things start to progress for you soon!
  • I honestly can't remember dilated I was before hand with DS. But I was 1 cm and 50% from 36 wks-39 this time and then at my 40 wk appointment yesterday I was at 3 cm. Hoping you see some progress soon and get to have your VBAC
  • I was 2 cm at my 40 week appointment, no change at my 41 week appointment. Had to schedule an induction. But that night very quickly went to 10 and had my daughter so crazy fast the doctor almost wasn't there. So it can change very fast!

  • I'm a FTM but I've been stuck at 2 cm and 80% effaced for 2 weeks now. I'm 40w today. I wouldn't let that get you down too much.
  • My cervix doesn't seem to change unless my water breaks/is broken. I was on the highest level of Pitocin and still nothing - no epi needed, no dilation. After my doctor broke my water, that's when labor began for me (so I'll define labor as "cervix changing").

    Good luck with your VBAC!

I just had my baby & I believe it was all due to my Dr separating my membranes. I was also only 1 cm with a soft cervix. Within 24 hrs contractions started. Check with your Dr about your options & good luck!
  • I went into labor with my first baby and third being only 1 cm dilated. One week before I had this last baby I was told only 1, still high and cervix thick. She came a week later on her own at two days overdue.
  • With DS I started a 1/2 the day he was born. I went from a 1/2 to a 9 in 3 hours. Don't be discouraged. It really means nothing.

  • You guys have been AMAZING. Reading all of your stories and encouragement has made me feel SO much better. My husband and I had a talk last night and he was really encouraging, too, trying to remind me to let my body do what it has to do and that I still have PLENTY of time (my doctor will let me go 42). It's hard to trust your body once a Dr. helped you to believe that it wouldn't do what it needed to before (my csection). I'm trying REALLY hard right now to focus on the positive, and your stories have made me believe that it is possible.

Hubby is "taking one for the team" and promised we can have sex every day (gee, doesn't that just sound so horrible for him!) and I'm going to spend my lunch break on a treadmill to keep my walking up since its so hot here right now.

Trying HARD to trust my body. Trust my baby. Trust myself. Oh ladies - this is so hard!!!
  • I had been contracting pretty hard core since week 28 (twins). They did nothing ;). I think it's one of the reason I was able to survive pit and without an epi nonetheless!! Nothing happened until my water was broken so try to hang in there!
