Sugar Test Saga...

So, we recently moved from Greenville, SC to Charlotte, NC. My last doctor's appointment in Greenville was for my 1 hour sugar test. Upon leaving they told both me and my husband that they would call if the results were abnormal. We never heard back from them so assumed all was well! A month later, at my first appointment with new doctor they looked through my records and informed me I had failed my sugar test. Not just by a little, by a lot!!! (Level was 170, normal is under 140 and 190 is automatic diagnosis for GD)
I'm furious that my doctor did not call me to inform me of the results of this test as it is a really big deal! I'm mad that I haven't been known to pay attention to sugar levels more... I'm at 30 weeks now, and have only gained 13lbs so I'm not so concerned about weight as I have generally eaten healthy but more just about the complications and weeks I have gone without being informed!
I go back next week for the three hour test... Delightful! Did any one you fail the first test but pass the second? What have you had to do to manage sugar levels?

Re: Sugar Test Saga...

  • With my first, I failed the first and passed the second but barely passed the second.  So i decided to go to the dietician anyway, and go ahead and treat my health as though I had GD.  So I did the glucose monitoring, and found it was easy to manage my glucose levels with the dietary changes my dietician told me about (mainly, more frequent smaller meals, and spreading out the carbs over all the meals).

this time around, my midwife had me skip the one hour test and go straight to the 3 hour test.  I failed it, so I'm starting the whole glucose monitoring again.  The difference is that this time I 'officially' have GD, so I'm worried that I won't have as easy of a time managing my blood glucose levels.  We'll see!

I found out late as well, but that's because I had the tests done very late.  My baby had other issues going on with his/her brain that was taking up everyone's attention, and we all sort of let the GD testing fall to the wayside.

Good luck to you.  I'd be angry and call my old doctor's office and ask them WTF if I were in your shoes.

  • I had a similar situation.  Luckily we have a portal online that shows our results.  They also said they would call if there was a problem.  So after seeing my failed result online and I called and got the "oh the doctor was busy" excuse.  I was told the same about the three hour but learned my lesson and called anyway!

  • I failed my one hour and passed my three hour without issue. I took the one hour in the afternoon without fasting and failed with a 138 (my midwife uses 135 as the cut off).Took the three hour after fasting and the results were much better. As you've probably noticed, there's no real consistency for how to take the test and the point cut off! After I failed the one hour I did what the PP did and changed my diet as if I did have GD just to be on the safe side.
  • I failed my first test and passed the 3 hour test.  I did carb load for 2 days before which helped my body deal with the sugar drink.

  • It is odd how they make you drink this nasty bottle of sugary drink containing way more sugar than you would normally consume and test your sugar levels from that... I was trying to remember if I ate anything before that test and I think I had two prices of whole wheat toast at about 6 that morning then tested at 11:45...
