Billi Babies

Any of your babies struggling to get to normal bilirubin levels? LO hasn't been put in the hospital and we were taken off home lights after two days but I feel like her progress is going so slowly (from 14 to 11). Her levels are making her so tired that she won't wake for feedings, but that is the main thing she needs to make her better- it is so frustrating and I feel like I'm failing to provide her with the proper nutrients, even despite my supply being great :( anyone else going through anything similar?

Re: Billi Babies

  • If it makes you feel any better, my daughters levels haven't been rechecked in almost two weeks and her last blood level was 18. They did the bilicheck light test two days after that and it had come down 0.4 points and they just said to go home and keep feeding as much as I can. We were never even put on light therapy. I wish we had been... She's still obviously jaundice and it stresses me out everyday. I would guess her levels are still above 10, easily. Hang in there. It's a slow process and levels need to be close to 25 to cause long term problems. But I totally get your frustration.

  • Yep. We were there for a week and a half. Still waiting for the final OK that her levels are low enough but I think we're in the clear. It does suck that the one thing she needs to get better (food) is the hardest to get to her because of the billi-induced lethargy. But it gets better!!
  • Hang in there mama! It does take a while, but she will be okay! Lucy was admitted to the NICU with a level of 19.8. Two days later, she dropped to a 12 so they let us go home. She hasn't been checked in 4 weeks but she still has yellow spots on her gums. We had to wake her to eat every 2 hours. We would let her nurse for 30 mins, then supplement her with 2 extra oz of pumped milk in the bottle. She had a hard time staying awake so when we'd see her start to drift, we'd change her diaper or put a little cold water on her. It seemed to work, at least for us. The supplementing in the bottle just helped to make sure she was getting enough. Sometimes she would eat all 2 oz, and sometimes she would eat less.
  • My DS just got out of the hospital for this. He's so much more alert now that his levels are dropping. I understand your frustration; I struggled to get him to eat, too. And my MIL loves to say my milk production is inadequate and that I should just switch to formula. :-@ hang in there, Momma! it does get better!
  • My baby was at a 17.1 when they checked her billi levels. I asked the nurse on shift why or how that could happen because when they last checked her the day before she was at 6.0 billi level so they weren't worried about it. Well this nurse tells me flatly "oh it's because you're not feeding her enough" wth? I was feeding her around the clock when ever she wanted. I started noticing her falling asleep during feedings and then I was having a hard time keeping her awake during feedings. I was trying really hard to stay on top of her feedings but this nurse totally made me feel like it's my fault that my newborn baby is going through this now... She's on triple phototherapy now. And I'm still breastfeeding along with pumping to supplement. I hope her levels drop enough so I can bring her home with me. I still feel guilty about it even though another nurse explained that it could be a number of reasons why babies get jaundice... Let's hang in there mommas!
