Formula from Pediatrician?

Those that FF, do you get formula samples every time you go to the pediatrician? I was given them every time without asking until the last time. I assume it's because we were all preoccupied with 2 month shots and the fact that LOs PCP was moving so we were saying our goodbyes, etc. I didn't have the nerve to ask at that appointment, but since then my low BM supply is gone and I exclusively FF, so every little bit would help with the crazy cost of formula. Since I'll be seeing a new PCP next month (same practice), I'm not sure if it's common enough for me to ask, or if my old PCP was just really kind. she would usually give me about 5 samples of similac sensitive per visit.

Curious to hear other's experiences.

Re: Formula from Pediatrician?

  • My regular ped - no. DD has a kidney doctor and is on a very specialized low-potassium formula. The nutritionist there gives me samples each time. Sometimes it's only 1 or 2 cans, sometimes it's up to 6. I don't really count on it but it's soooo nice when it happens!

  • We were given samples once, at her 1 month appointment when we first discovered she needed formula due to my low supply.
  • Thank you both! I suspected this ped was just generous. DD's first week home we spent every day at the ped trying to get her weight up and get rid of her jaundice. That's when we realized I needed to supplement, so the ped started giving samples constantly and just never stopped. I'm not betting on having that same relationship with someone new. :/
  • Lucky! My daughter has been exclusively formula fed since 3 weeks and we were never offered anything :/. We go through 9 cans a month, it's nuts! $150! I think this month she might even need 10 since she's eating more. I can't wait till we can start feeding her baby food!
  • I bf and at my last appt the nurse asked if I wanted formula just to have. She gave me a few cans. I would just ask. It's not like the doctor pays for them. Its there to be given away.
  • If you register at enfamil.com, they will send you a free welcome pack with a cooler, three cans of different formulas and other goodies..I've done it with both of my babies. Also, they will send $15 coupons every month for a year;)
  • Our Peditrician has a note in the room that says if you don't see the formula you use ask for a sample . I ask everytime , no shame in it . Formulas expensive every little bit counts . Plus I think reps for the company's go into offices frequently . And I would definitely sign up with whichever company you use , they send good coupons .
  • I do get enfamil and similac checks in the mail... not as good as free though! Going tomorrow for a height and weight check, I'll ask then. :)
  • Register on Similac website and they send TONS of coupons and samples! My pediatrician gave me samples like the first 2 times I had appointments but not every time. I don't think I would ask for samples though, Similac sends so many coupons in the mail I have a 12 week old and I still have TONS left.
