Upper Lip Tie

Anyone have any experience with babies with an upper lip tie? We went & saw a lactation consultant today & she said that my LO's lip tie will probably make it difficult for us to successfully BF because she cannot latch properly & is not getting enough milk (my nipples are pretty beat up right now, too). We have an appt with a pediatric dentist tomorrow to discuss having it removed by laser. I'm having such a hard time with this since my LO is only a week old but I know the benefits of breastfeeding outweigh my other options (exclusively pumping or formula feeding). For some reason I feel selfish putting her through this but I really want to have a good BF relationship. And damn these hormones that won't let me stop crying about this all!

Re: Upper Lip Tie

  • It take no time to done in office here ( at least that's what happens here) and heals fast. Most babies do well with a bit of pain med and nursing right after the procedure. You should see an immediate improvement after the pain and swelling goes down. Search for a lip and tongue tie group local to you on Facebook there's lots of them out there they can offer more local support and tell you more about the doctors you seeing.

  • My two boys both had their tongues tied and we waited entirely too long to cut them. First son was 11 months and didn't eat solids until after that, and my second son was nearly 3 months. Both way too long to have a successful breastfeeding relationship. So when my daughter was born I made sure they checked her over really well for a tie issue so that we could get it taken care of asap so we could nurse. She was borderline so we have left it alone as of now, since she is nursing well, however my advice to anyone with this potential issue is to fix it soon. It really is a very easy procedure and it helps BFing as well as potentially eating, dental and speech issues down the line.
  • My daughter was tongue tied as well. Didn't get hers done till she was a month. And that month was awful with breastfeeding. Things got much better after it was done and she didn't even make a big fuss when it was done. Fed her immediately after and she seemed fine. If this little one is also tongue tied we will have hers clipped as soon as possible.
  • I had an upper lip tie, and it was not fixed until I was about 10 years old because my dentist mentioned it would cause problems for me with my braces (I had a gap between my teeth because the tie was so large). FWIW, I wish it would have been fixed when I was too little to remember, because it was pretty painful for me at age 10. My mom didn't have success breastfeeding, although I'm not sure if the lip tie was the reason. They did mention lip ties in my breastfeeding class, and I will be checking DD when she is born to try and prevent any potential BF'ing issues. Good luck with your decision!
  • Is this something the pediatrician can check when they visit the baby in the hospital or the LC in the hospital? I hear people talk about it a lot.
  • Both of my boys has tongue ties and it was no big deal to have them clipped. They each cried for like 30 seconds and then nursed and it never seemed to bother them again. It made a HUGE different with breastfeeding!
  • Thanks everyone for your responses! It sounds like it's the best thing to do, but still breaks my heart to have to do it! I like to think my little girl is perfect just the way she is!
  • It's very common, and a very quick, low-pain procedure from what I've been told.
  • It went great! She ended up having a class 4 lip tie & class 4 (posterior) tongue tie. The dentist was so awesome & relatable--she really made us feel better about our decision. We went ahead & did the procedure right away & it took less than 2 minutes all together. I didn't stay in the room (I was already a blubbering mess) but my husband did & she did great! I was able to nurse her right after, which wasn't completely pain free since my nipples are so beat up, but I could feel a difference! Now she's taking a nap ☺️
  • I'm having issues breastfeeding because of this. I have had 3 LC tell me they think this is the problem but the pedi says they won to anything. We have had to supplement with formula since day 3 and I'm about to give up bf all together. Right now I'm pumping and bottle feeding it's been so hard and I can't stop crying about it either. I want to bf so bad.
  • @mrsb30 if you want to continue bfing find your local La Leche group or contact your LC s again and they can get you in touch with a doctor that will help you fix a tie! Some doctors just aren't knowledgable about breastfeeding and don't know how to correct the issue, in cases like this you need to find someone who will help! LLL leaders have professional liaison people who can get you started in the right direction. I'm sorry your pediatrician is being ridiculous :(

I'm so sorry! I am/was in the same boat... Exclusively pumping is very frustrating! Can you ask you pedi to at least give you a referral so you can see a specialist for a second opinion?

Oh & I couldn't stop crying for the last 24 hours trying to decide what to do!
  • Definitely do it if you think it will help. Doing it by laser now is much better than the options we now have for my daughter. We didn't know she had one, and she ended up with a lot of nursing issues (positional problems, gas, reflux, I was really tore up - like missing chunks). We didn't have weight gain issues fortunately, so I never needed to supplement and made it till a little over 18 months, but nursing what not an enjoyable thing I don't think for either one of us.

Her pediatric dentist is now telling me that because it is so thick, she will likely need it clipped when her permanent teeth come in. This will require numbing it, clipping it, and stitches since it is so much larger now that when she was a baby. He said it may end up tearing on its own before then and to expect a lot of blood if that happens :/ Try not to think about it being selfish and causing pain now, try to think of it as you are ensuring you can provide your baby with breastmilk, lessen her chances of gas and reflux problems, and eliminate the need for having to clip it and get stitches or have it tear down the road. I beat myself up all the time for not realizing it back then. It was one of the very first things I had the pediatrician look at in the hospital for this baby because of this (fortunately, she is nursing a lot better and doesn't seem to have one). Good luck!
