Post C Section Care

For those mommies who have had c sections, is there anything you recommend I should get for post partum care? I've been reading about the c panty, scar creams etc and was wondering if anyone had any advice on what worked best for you. TIA

Re: Post C Section Care

  • I was discharged with a PICO dressing that had a little vacuum pump which helps the wound heal faster. I was instructed to remove the dressing after 1 week. When I did, the wound was closed and looked great with no drainage. Since then, I've just been keeping it clean with witch hazel once or twice a day between showers.

I also have a c panty and I love it. It's super comfortable and my tummy has shrunk down considerably since I started wearing it. I'm not a big fan of the incision insert, because it doesn't really go over my incision and it irritates my skin a little.

Also, at first, it was really hard to get a pad to stick to the c panty, but it's better now. That was a pain.

  • Love the C Panty (I got the high waisted one). I also got a belly bandit and as my belly shrinks and the C Panty gets a little bigger I wore the belly bandit on top. Having something tight over my incision made me feel better and more secure. Also, this is really odd to me, but after my C Section when they moved me from recovery to my room on mother/baby, I was excessively thirsty, so if there's anything specific you like to hydrate with bring it! Obvious the hospital has water and ice chips, but if you have a favorite water bottle or anything it may be nice to have.
  • I had an unplanned c-section. The first few days home I wore my maternity shorts with the full panel plus my belly band from early pregnancy over that for support. That made a huge difference. If you have a belly band already you may be able to skip the cpanty. Even if you don't you may opt for that instead since you could wear it several days in a row without feeling gross. Lol. Now I'm a week out and just wearing my full panel maternity shorts during the day and regular gym shorts to bed.

As far as scar cream, I'm not really worried about it. My incision is so low that no one other than DH and I will ever see it. Once the stitches dissolve I'll probably apply coconut oil for a while just to try to minimize the scar. But for me, it's not a big deal.

The biggest thing that helped me recover was not letting myself be too inactive. It's a real balancing act. Push yourself too hard and you'll overdo it. But you need some movement/activity in order to speed up healing. My last day at the hospital my docs had me doing a lap around the wing every couple hours. Even at home I could tell that I was a lot stiffer and more sore if I sat for too long.

    Good luck!
  • For me my best friend has been my heating pad! I've been sore but it's tolerable but my heating pad makes it feel better! Get as many of the undies that the hospital will give you. Anything that will be lose on the incision area. A lot of rest is the best thing. When They say don't over do it they mean it. It's really easy to over do it. But luckily a week later and it only hurts if I get up to fast. I have had awful back spasms but I think that was from the three epidurals that didn't freaking work!
  • Oh, and I thought of one more thing....easy to eat but somewhat heavy snacks. If you're like me taking pain medicine on an empty stomach is a serious no-no! And you'll need to take an OTC stool softener while you're on the pain medicine. Trust me.

^ THIS!!!!!! I can't describe what a nightmare it is to vomit with a brand new incision. Make sure you eat at least a few crackers when you take your pills even if your not hungry at all. Seriously.

Yep. Learned this the hard way after a previous abdominal surgery required me to be on pain meds. I set an alarm for 2am to take my next dose and didn't eat anything first. By 2:15 DH was holding me over the sink while I was puking. I will never make that mistake again!
  • Drink a ton of water. Get up and walk as soon as you can, it will be the worst pain but the more you walk the better you will feel.
  • Also if you know anesthesia or pain meds make you nauseous, ask for zofran in your IV... Lifesaver
  • It can be difficult to get up and down at first but the more walking around you do the better you'll feel after and the less swelling you'll have. I'm a week out and can't even feel my incision! I can move around just like I used to. I don't use any cream on it and it is hardly noticeable. I would agree that you need a ton of water for after, and I'm not sure if everyone bleeds or if it's just because I pushed for a while but definitely have a ton of pads if you will need them for down there too! Good luck.
  • @malonc2 I think everyone bleeds. I didn't get the chance to push and I am bleeding like crazy
  • Stool softener!!! That's the first thing I asked for in recovery bc I knew how terrible it was with my 1st! Like pp's have said, getting up and walking helps tremendously!!! I didn't do that with my 1st bc of the pain, but I didn't give myself the choice this time! DH had to work, so I had to rely on myself to get to the NICU. Walking was the best medicine!
You'll want a pillow to hold against your stomach when you cough or sneeze!
    Gl!!!:-)
  • I agree definitely eating while taking pain pills. Also stool softener. Took me a full week after to poop! My first was a vaginal birth. This birth resulted in an emergency csection. I Was pretty emotional as I was dreading a c and it was a pretty traumatic chain of events but I have to say it really hasn't been too bad. In fact I think the care has been easier than my episiotomy I had with my first.

I'm bleeding too. My nurse said to empty my bladder regularly (every 2-3hrs) and I will have less bleeding. Not sure why but it's noticeably true. Even now, a week out, the fuller I let my bladder get, the more bleeding I have.
  • high waisted briefs were my best friend. Ice packs. Loose fitting sweat pants or yoga pants that sat high on my waist. stool softeners. as much as it hurts, try to walk as much as possible, its worth it in the long run for a faster recovery.
Always hold on to hope ❤
