Baby measuring big

Any experienced mommies previous baby's measuring big? I'm ftm 23 weeks along. At my 13 week ultrasound my little girl was measuring a few days ahead but my OB said he wasn't going to change my EDD for a few days. When I went for my anatomy scan at 19 weeks she was weighing in a little more than normal babies at that week and her head was measuring 20 weeks 3 days and abdomen was measuring at almost 20 weeks but OB still didn't change my EDD. Did any other mommies maybe have their baby early? I'm terrified of carrying full term with a big baby.

Re: Baby measuring big

  • What were her percentiles?  Most OBs aren't concerned unless the baby is over 95th percentile.  It is typical for baby's measurements to not be exact for the gestation at the anatomy scan.  My DD was measuring 19 weeks 6 days for head circumference and 20 weeks 4 days for abdomen for example at 20 weeks.  About a week off isn't too bad I would imagine.

  • Honestly, so much of the prediction is just not accurate. They can tell you "big" or "small" but really, there is no absolute way to predict. I know of situations where women were told they were having a 10lb baby and it came out 8 lbs. and vice versa.

I wouldn't worry about it, that's what you pay your OB for ;) Baby will come when the time is right.

I've read TONS of stories where the estimation is a big baby, but baby comes out way smaller than expected - and vice versa. I wouldn't worry about it now, so early, still lots of growing and catching up to do :) Plus 1 week isn't crazy.
  • I went through this with my son. He was measuring big right from the start. The doctor kept the original due date and I was induced on my due date. Other than the doctor not wanting me to go past the original due date, everything was fine...I just had the pleasure of pushing a 9lb 9oz bundle of joy out of me!
  • Agree with PP's. They did an ultrasound a couple weeks before I was due with DD because they said she was measuring big and they said according to this LO I'll be doing that again. I think they thought my DD was gonna be huge because they talked about c-section depending how big she was measuring, but she came out on her own timing vaginally when I was 39w3d. She was 8lbs. 13oz. Big but not huge. It's all just estimation!
  • I honestly wouldn't think twice about it. What's going to happen will happen. My best friend measured big at her anatomy scan (with her first) and doc predicted an 8.5lb baby. Then on her due date he felt around her stomach and told her he still thought an 8+ lbs baby. She delivered four days late and her son was 6lb 7oz ... nowhere NEAR the prediction.

My sis also has four kids and all of her kids were off by a pound (from predictions) in either direction.

My LO was measuring a week ahead the whole time and this one is doing the same so far. Didn't change my due date either time. They said they always base everything off of the first ultrasound. They'll be able to tell you more size wise and what that means for delivery, etc at your 38 week ultrasound. My ultrasound tech has said they don't get concerned unless they baby is measuring small or over two weeks bigger.
  • I just had my anatomy scan and he is measuring 2 weeks farther along than what I am. Puts me in the 71st percentile so they weren't concerned at all. Doctor just said he may be a little bigger and didn't change my EDD
  • I was told at my anatomy scan baby was measuring 4 days ahead but they won't change your due date if you're within that range. Now if you were measuring 2wks ahead, they might. And like other pps have said, it's just an estimation. Both my boys were over 8lbs. First c-sec, second vbac. You'll be fine :)
  • I was told I'm measuring around 10 days ahead. Doctor hinted at gestational diabetes. I go in for my test on Monday.
  • My neighbor was measuring over a week ahead so they changed her due date pretty much her whole pregnancy. When it came time to give birth she was scheduled to be induced the evening of her original due date since baby was measuring big. She went into labor naturally and gave birth to a 6lb 4oz baby girl.
My OBdoesnt do due date changes. At NT scan baby was measuring right on schedule, and at the anatomy scan baby was measuring over a week ahead. EDD is still 12.2.15! :)

  • When I had my son he was always a week ahead, he slowed down at the end though and ended up being 8lb 14oz. A friend of mind had an ultrasound a few weeks before her bub was born and was told he'd be 6lb something, he was almost 9lb born so I have to agree with PPs in that they can be inaccurate. Don't stress it :)
  • I had my first ultrasound at 18w3d and the baby's length was measuring 20w2d and head circ was 19w6d. I wouldn't be surprised if my dates are off, but I haven't talked to my doctor yet since the U/S. I wouldn't be surprised though if he doesn't change the dates as he is pretty old school like that. :) My Due date is dec 30 and if baby is a week and a bit ahead it would put us at Christmas!
My friend was measuring 3 days ahead and her doctor changed her due date. I thought that was absolutely ridiculous.
  • At my anatomy scan at 20 weeks my LO was weighing at 15 oz and in the 95%. They are keeping the measurements based off my original due date but did put an EDD at 12/16 instead of the original 12/24 (although they told me they are keeping the 12/24 date). I'm guessing she is gonna come early but regardless it isn't anything to worry about unless the glucose tests come back with irregularities. My doctor said it just meant that we are "excelling at making babies" haha I think she was trying to make me feel better because I was pretty worried initially.
  • General rule of thumb, if baby is measuring over 2 weeks ahead, due date gets moved up 1 week.
  • I am 24w on Tuesday and had my monthly OB appt this morning. Doc measured my bump for the first time and it measured at 28w. I feel like my bloat has stayed the same size this ENTIRE pregnancy and my nurse neighbor keeps asserting I'm carrying twins. Baby's been measuring small on the ultrasounds but I guess this shows things change all of the time. I could do nothing but laugh! OB wasn't worried so I'm not either. Baby can't read a calendar and will come when he's ready no matter what any of the grown ups say.
