Is the maternity tour worth it?

I have been debating on whether or not to sign up for the hospital tour, the hospital is ten minutes from our house and I have been there before to see friends/family after they have had a baby. I don't know all the details but my doctor gave us a very detailed packet of info about the maternity ward at the hospital. Is that enough? Or should I still go on the tour?

Re: Is the maternity tour worth it?

  • I would take the tour. It's probably only an hour of your time & gives you a chance to ask a lot of questions. I liked being able to visualize where I will be during and after birth. Plus, we were able to tour the NICU, which gave me peace of my mind.

  • I'd do it. They showed us the nurses station, explained how the room us configured, and answered questions.
  • It was helpful to me just to see all the extra exam rooms that you don't normally see. Plus hearing how things were going to happen put my mind at ease.
  • We did an all day birthing class at our hospital, but the tour was by far the most valuable part. Unless you REALLY don't have the time to spare, I think it's worth it just to be able to visualize the space, know for sure where you should check in and who/when you should call when labor starts, and confirm your hospital's policies and procedures.
  • Everyone I talked to says it's totally worth it.  I work at the sister hospital to the one I'm delivering at and have been there a million times, but am still going to do it.  They will be able to give you info you can't get from just visiting a friend on the unit, such as how things will work during you L&D experience.
  • I'm doing my tour this evening. As a ftm, there's things I'd like to know as far as preparing for my little guys arrival that I feel only the hospital could answer. I've spent countless hours in L&D between family and close friends but it's MY turn. And you never know what policies and things have changed. Its also a good way to find out what your hospital provides for you and baby so it'll make bag packing easier. To me, that's all the reason I need lol.
  • That's all I did with my last pregnancy and it was worth it. If I didn't I wouldn't have known that the maternity ward had a super secret entrance behind the ER! They were also great at answering questions we had about our stay and what to expect.
  • I loved the hospital tour and plan to go again in a couple weeks with my SO. I had no clue that you can just walk into the maternity ward at any time if you feel like something is wrong or labor has started. Also, they explain their security protocols and how to identify staff and nurses so you know somebody isn't an impostor. I liked seeing the rooms and what to expect when you're there. Our hospital rooms have microwaves and mini fridges in each room which will be nice.
  • It has put my mind at ease more than anything else. After the tour I feel so much better about our delivery as a whole, the nurses we met were amazing, I know that I will have privacy along with great care for both me and the baby. They showed me the labour tub and a few othe options that I have so that I know what I can ask for, I know where to go, have seen the rooms I am in and feel so much more comfortable going in. I would say do it, without hesitation!

  • Definitely, I wouldn't want to miss out on any extra information I can get from the day of delivery/hospital.
  • I would just so you know exactly where to go and more importantly whoever you have with you. My hubby is very bad with directions. Had
To tell him multiple times where to go to get there even though he has been 3 times! I also just asked a lot of random little questions.

We're the opposite! I have no sense of direction, so DH is going to have to get us up to L&D! That said, I'd recommend doing the tour. In my hospital, at least, it's only about an hour and you'll probably pick up a few tidbits that may be helpful.
  • I would definitely say worth it. My hospital only offers tours on 3 Saturday and 4 Tuesday of the month. So I scheduled the tour for the week before baby is due via c section.
Chances are we have baby and get the hands on tour.

  • We've not gone yet but have signed up for one on Sept 9th. My OB highly recommends we go, so why not. It only takes a bit of time and I'm sure it'll put my mind at ease a bit ^^

  • My hubby and I just did a prenatal class that included the tour. And I found it very insightful and note I know what to expect.
  • Yessssss its totally worth it. You will have peace of mind & have a better idea of the procedures you muat follow from the time youre admitted until the time you leave to go home. Ita about an hour lonag but full of great info!!!
  • I just did my tour last week with my husband.  I am a FTM and I felt it was worth it.  The nurse was great and she even explained what some of the equipment was and what it is used for.  I am glad I know now instead of asking as it is happening.  Security info was also comforting and it was nice to see the rooms.  I feel like I have a much better idea of what to expect at this point.
  • I went and loved it! I learned a few things and started to get excited and pictured myself there in a few months time. It was a bit like house hunting! You go and see a place you really like and get all excited!
  • Yes, worth it!! I went with my first two and will go again this time since its been seven years and I'm sure things have changed. Also, if your hospital allows pre registration, do that too. Saves a lot of time when you get there on the big day!
  • I was told we get a small one and to go whenever my husband was off work to pre register and look around. They were a bit rude and we were not offered a tour:(
