Harmony vs. Combined screening

edited August 2015 in March 2016 Moms
Hi ladies,

My OB gave me the option to have the Harmony blood test next week in my 10th week (which is accurate for finding chromosomal abnormalities and as a bonus you find out sex of baby), OR doing what has always been the "gold standard" (his words) NT scan at 12 weeks with the blood test that combined give you a risk. I feel like going with the Harmony blood test is the obvious way to go due to the accuracy, but then I won't have an ultrasound until 18 weeks and that scares me with my history of missed miscarriage. Would it be silly to go with the lower accuracy NT scan just to be able to get an ultrasound? I am 27 with no family history of chromosomal anomalies so I am not considered "high risk". Thank you ladies!

Re: Harmony vs. Combined screening

  • My OB said that the cell-free DNA test (Harmony) and the NT scan + blood tests actually each can identify things that the other cannot. She recommended doing both if we really wanted the best coverage, but seemed more convinced of the NT scan's utility. Is there a reason he only wants you to do one? I would call your insurance to see what they cover. The Harmony test is usually not covered in women under 35 unless there is some special recommendation from the doc, but I think the NT/integrated is usually covered for all.
For my previous (first) pregnancy the DNA test was still very expensive and I was only 28 so I didn't have it done, just the NT.
    Good luck!

  • Thank you for the response! He said since I am not high risk, he didn't think it were necessary but that I could ask the perinatologist when I go for the NT scan if I could do both (if that's what I wanted). I have been researching and did see that they discover different things and therefore could both be beneficial to have. I heard the out-of-pocket for Harmony is $200.00.
