3rd Trimester

Stripping membranes

Im 38 weeks. Having my membranes stripped at my appointment this afternoon. Last weeks appointment I was almost 2cm dilated and 50% effaced. I plan on walking like crazy after my appointment today and maybe some sex to get this baby out. Anyone recommend anything else? Anyone had success with getting your membranes stripped?

Re: Stripping membranes

  • Is there a reason you want your baby born two weeks early?

  • I don't know your personal situation but that's really early. I had that done with my third pregnancy but I was over 40weeks. My dr wouldn't do it any earlier than my EDD and only did because I was concerned about having another big baby. But it did nothing for me personally. Honestly baby will come when he/she is ready. I tried many things and it never worked with any of my pregnancies.
  • Our insurance is running out.
  • Wow. I can't imagine an OB seriously helping a woman induce labor early because her insurance is running out. If you're in the US, you should check out the healthcare.gov website and see if you qualify for government insurance until you replace the one that's running out. Or look into purchasing COBRA until you have a permanent fix.

Sadly some doctors are in it for the money and "inducing" early has a higher chance of more complications which means a bigger pay day for them.

  • From what I read the membrane stripping only really works if the baby is ready to come out.  I do not personally have any experience with it.

I definitely agree with this. I had nine stripped twice with my oldest and still went past my due date.
  • I had mine stripped at my "40 weeks and 3 days" appointment with my first. At that point I was just over 2cm. That was a Wednesday afternoon. Real intense contractions started late Thursday night and DD was born "Saturday" at 12:30 in the morning. Not sure if that's what did it or if it would have happened anyways, but that's my experience.
  • I had mine stripped the first time around at 37, 38, and 39.6 weeks. It finally worked on the last try and DS was born on his due date. I think I tried everything to get him out. I walked every night, ate buckets of pineapple, put Dave's Insanity Sauce (hot sauce) on everything, took Evening Primrose oil, had daily sex, ate eggplant parm (read it on a blog and was ready to try anything), took showers and let the hot water hit my back (DH's aunt swore by this), tried acupressure on my ankles, etc. If someone, somewhere on the internet suggested it - I tried it. Nothing worked. He came when he was ready to come.
  • I had mine stripped at 39 weeks ( 2 days before I was 40 weeks) and it did nothing but create cramps!! itty bitty will come out when ready!! I'm not gonna bash your situation but that baby needs to stay in until ready!!

I was 41 weeks before I got mine stripped & I'd honestly not do it again.

38 weeks is entirely too early to do this IMHO. You aren't even full term. It's uncomfortable & probably pointless. Baby will come when they are ready.

This is not a reason to induce early. I'm sorry, it's just not.

You may have to pay out of pocket & suck it up, but don't put your kid through forcible induction just to save money. What if they end up in the NICU? Then your insurance will run out AND you'll have a higher bill.

Not to mention if all your efforts distress the infant & you have to have a C-section. No money saved there either.

Seriously-- money sucks, but health issues suck more. Please exercise some common sense before your concern for your wallet!

What?! The doctors don't get paid this way...

    Yes. All of this.
  • I think you asked the question in order to make an informed decision not to be judged. Do what is best for you and your family. Your doctor is a trained professional. Trust his/her expertise. The insurance issue may be a non- issue. Talk to the hospital financial department about programs for uninsured/underinsured patients.
  • First of all "full term" is at 37 weeks. It's so obnoxious how some women act like if you have the baby before 40 weeks there is something wrong. Your baby is fully developed at 38 weeks. I've had 2 children one at 36 weeks 6 days and one at 37 weeks 5 days. I'm currently 35 weeks pregnant with number 3. My children were born healthy. No extended hospital stay, no problems at all. Both of my children 7yrs and 4yrs are advanced for their age. Every woman and every pregnancy is different. You don't have to go .40+ weeks and have a 9 or 10 lb baby.

    Nope.

"ACOG and SMFM now define a full-term pregnancy as a pregnancy that lasts between 39 weeks, 0 days and 40 weeks 6 days. Babies born full term have the best chance of being healthy, compared with babies born earlier or later."
  • EXACTLY!!!!
  • its amazing how some of u guys are so quick to judge others on here. wow! all she asked was did anyone had any success getting their membranes stripped
  • congrats @samigrant.
hope u and baby are both well
