How much is your LO eating?

My son is 3.5 weeks old, bottle fed breastmilk, and takes in between 2.5-4 oz a feeding session, which is every 2-3 hours. He does drip/spill some. It's spread over: initial feeding, burping, changing diaper, then "top-off" feeding.

When I had a lactation consultant do a home visit last week, she said he's taking in as much as a 2-3 month old. At this point, he gained 2 lbs over his birth weight. (We are demand-feeding him so I didn't think it was too much...)

Should I be concerned we're over-feeding?

Re: How much is your LO eating?

  • Nope, my baby boy was the same. My pediatrician said there is no such thing as a breastfeeding baby gaining too much weight. Now, mine's 5 weeks and probably gained 4 lbs since birth.

  • Mine is formula fed but he's been taking 4 oz at a time since 2 weeks old and he will be 6 weeks Friday. Some babies eat more than others.

  • My son is 4 weeks and eats between 2-4 oz every feeding. He eats about every 2-3 hrs. He's been eating that much for the past 2 weeks.
  • My daughter eats about 4 to 5oz a feeding. My pediatrician was ok with this, and happy with her weight gain (about 2 lbs since birth) she's 4 weeks old.
  • My daughter is 9 weeks and just started eating 2 1/2 oz. consistently. But she has IUGR and some other problems, she was 3 lbs 9 oz and she was 37 weeks when she was born. I think it just depends on the baby :) talk to your pediatrician on it, but I would also get a second opinion :) personally I don't think there is such thing as over feeding at this age...but I could be wrong! :)
  • I'm also demand feeding my son and he takes 3-5 ounces every 3 hours. Sometimes more and he's having a healthy weight gain!
  • My little girl is 7 weeks and she drinks 4oz every 4 hours.
  • My son is 6.5 weeks and eats 3.5-4 oz consistently every 3 hours during the day. At night he'll go one 4 hour stretch and gets 4 oz when he wakes up then. I don't know if he gets more when I nurse him, we alternate pumped BM and boobies.
  • My pediatrician told me that a good rule of thumb is up to 1 oz for every 2 lbs that they weigh. So my 10lb 4.5 week old can eat up to 5oz per feeding (though he's generally more in the 4oz range for most feedings, but if he's still rooting, we let him go up to 5)
  • My LO will be 7 weeks Friday and he takes about 4oz every 2-4 , breast milk and formula, sometimes when he is rooting I go up to 5 also

@cclark1998 what do you do if he wants more than 5?

  • My LO is taking 4 - 5 oz every 3 to 4 hours, sometimes longer if she's sleeping as I don't want to disturb her. She's 6 weeks tomorrow. Some people have said that's too much, and to give her a pacifier after a while. And, sometimes that works. But, I've given her up to 6 oz at a feeding because she would not take the pacifier and she was still rooting.
  • Thanks everyone! I know each LO is different but it helps to hear that others are doing what mine is.

  • Can you really overfeed your baby though? I know if my son isn't hungry he spits my boob out of his mouth.
  • @ashleytiff I think with bottle feeding there is a possibility of overfeeding... But I'm doing the paced-feeding method so hopefully I'm not
