stupid question...

I know this is stupid but my mind is becoming irrational. Is it possible to go into labor or give birth without feeling any contractions?
At my last appointment dr said I was an easy 3 cm and she'd probably even call it a 4. I haven't felt any real contractions but things are happening somehow. Lately LO has felt so low like if I were to reach in I could touch him low. I'm 39+2 and just waiting for contractions to start.
You'd think with this being my third I should know but it's a different dad than my first two and it has been 7 years since I've given birth. Seeing everyone's announcements is making me feel I'm gonna be the last one.

Re: stupid question...

  • A good friend of mine was dilated up to a four and was feeling no contractions, went in for her weekly appointment, and they sent her on to L&D. 2 hours later, she had a baby. It was so crazy! She said she had just been feeling a little crampy. Maybe that will be you and that baby will come soon!

Was this me!!?? This exact thing happened to me yesterday!!

I was having 'uncomfortable' intermittent cramps from about 4am til my dr appointment at 11.00. I told him this and he checked and I was 4cm dilated so sent me to the birthing unit. Less than 3 hours later I was holding my baby!
  • Yes to labor, I didn't know I was in labor. I had a dull back ache for 2 days. Moved my weekly appointment up by a day and after they checked me they sent me straight to the hospital. I was 4cm dilated and having back labor because the baby was face up.

  • I'm in the same boat had my appt yesterday and I'm 3.5 almost 4 and 70% thinned and she said he's real low....all I have had is period like cramps in my back. I actually don't mind cause I rather not be in a lot of pain, just also a bit worried about getting to hospital in time as I'm strep B + and would prefer to get both bags of antibiotics so I don't have to stay in the hospital 48 hrs...40 weeks today!
  • They mentioned at my last appointment that the baby is facing the wrong direction, does that mean i'll have back labor then instead of the normal contractions?  sorry if that's a stupid question :/
  • @Crystal321 It's possible! My mom and best friend both had back labor. My mom was just telling me about that actually. She said it felt like period pain or like a sore back but just in the lower back area.

I was induced and I didn't feel any contractions for 6 hours till I was past 10 cm and my baby was trying to come out . But even then my contractions weren't all to bad . So yeah it's very possible depending on your body and how it takes to things .

The baby still has time to turn. But if the baby is face up when you do go into labor there is probably a good chance you will feel it in your back. You could also feel contractions in the front. The nurses were not able to turn the baby while I was laboring. Ended up delivering sideways and had back labor the entire time.

I've read a lot that sunny side up babies typically produce back labor pains. There's several positions recommended to try to get baby to turn face down.. One includes getting on all fours, 10mins x2/day. Gravity supposed shifts the baby's weight (back/bum) towards the floor. Also lots of positions to create an ant pelvic tilt (not reclining back with feet up, etc). I've been trying to be aware of my positions just in case! Was also told the all fours, increases pressure on the cervix which helps stimulate it to prepare it for birth!

My baby was face down and I still had back labor

My little guy was sunny side up and I had back labor in addition to normal contractions. So it may not be an either/or situation.
