Crying over spilled milk

We have been exclusively pumping since we got home over a week ago. Tonight, after putting clean sheets on the bed at 11 due to spilling my water everywhere, I spilled almost an ounce of freshly pumped milk :(( Half of it is sitting in a pool on the floor while the rest has been absorbed by my no-longer-clean sheets and my mattress. Sigh.

Re: Crying over spilled milk

  • I spilt milk three times yesterday :((

Where are our spill proof containers?!

I'm just a butter fingers, but I was so upset!!
  • DD knocked over a 2Oz freshly pumped bottle, I immediately saw Red X( but realized it was my innocent toddler, unaware of the value of 20mins of pumping worth BM.

  • I dropped 4oz yesterday and was pissed!
  • How in the EFF do yall pump 20 oz?!!! I'm ecstatic if I get 3-5!!

I know. I barely get any.

I think she means 2 oz.
  • I haven't knocked any over but one of my boobs leaks so much in my breast pad each day. I'm sad to throw it away. Because it used to be pierced it has a few extra holes and is way leakier. I wonder how I can save the breast milk? Or eventually if I will ever be able to stop wearing a pad in that side. Seems like I will have to forever.

You are getting 5oz in one setting? !
  • I'm getting anywhere from 2-7 oz per boob, but I'm also extremely engorged right now :/
  • For me, getting 1 oz per boob is wishful thinking. I loose little drops and are literally in tears! !! Baby won't latch because she's really impatient.
Question for everyone that pumps: what bottles do you use?
I've tried munchkin latch- I didn't like the nipple collapsing
    Nuk- bottle leaks
    Tommy tippie- baby couldn't latch
Joovy boob- baby likes but she gulps down like crazy which scares me
Mam- cheap yet very nice bottle.

Just like to get ideas. We're almost latching, but I have to get her when she's not hungry so she'll try. In the meantime, I have to use bottle till she (and me) get the hang of breast feeding.
Also, has anyone tried the medela calma nipple?
  • I use Dr. Browns and she has not had nipple confusion and very little spit up.

@KateDerek Have you looked into this product? Seems like it could be a good solution to the leaking! I never even thought about the extra possible leakage with previous piercings! I may need to get a set myself.

  • I use nuk because it's what I've used with all three babies, I always point the little hole upwards facing their nose and don't have an issue with leaking:)
  • I had an oversupply with twins and could pump two whole large Dr Brown bottles (usually my middle of the night pump). It was insane! I was pumping 70 oz a day (no exaggeration) but I also got mastitis twice from oversupply/inadequate emptying from the pump. All your outputs sounds great/normal :)

  • This was the onset of my baby blues. I could barely pump anything anyway and I spilled it. Then DH had the nerve to say it wasn't a big deal. He almost died.

  • @gulimz I have the medela calma and baby hates it! She kind of keeps it in her mouth then spits it out, then again, that's how she does when she nurses too so who knows! It's worth a try!

We also use Nuk and don't have a problem!

I feel the same way! I have started putting an empty bottle under one boob while I pump the other. It is so sad to see the 0.5 oz in that bottle after pumping one side! That amount or more is what is usually wasted. :(

    Same.
  • @emmacake08 Maybe you can help me! I have an oversupply right now without pumping because LO wants to comfort nurse so often. She is literally eating until she pukes and I still have milk left. The problem is that pumping it out leads to MORE milk! Its like
a vicious cycle that I can't get out of. My LC had me stop pumping to slow down my supply but its not working well enough and I'm terrified of mastitis! :(
  • @gulimz I was given 2 of these as a free sample at the pediatrician office and right now they're our favorite
  • Ps pardon my legs in that picture haha

We use the evenflo glass bottles with the slow flow nipples they came with. The bottles are compatible with my medela pis pump and the nipples have a little vent built in that seems to work well for LO.

Arnt you lucky. I have horrible milk supply.
  • @carleyec93 really the only thing that worked for us was weaning off pumping all together. Once they could nurse and my supply regulated down, I never had oversupply or mastitis again. I would say keep doing what you're doing focusing on BF and not pumping. In the first month, overabundance of supply is more common and I would think you'll regulate down (soon I hope!). As far as the comfort nursing, that sounds exactly like my LOs. They ate until they puked what looked like buckets of milk (stupid reflux) but after 2-3 months they outgrew it. For mine even on bottles I figured out that they weren't going to drink less and that was just part of a reflux baby. As long as you're burping, I would keep letting her feed unlimited. You're less likely to get mastitis from BF because LO can empty a breast better than a pump. If you feel dizzy or get a hard, hot spot in your breast, call your OB. Mine always came on as dizziness and then I'd take my temperature and it was 103.5. It can come on super fast but it's pretty obvious if you have it and antibiotics clear it up pretty fast too! I hope none of you get it!

  • @emmacake08 Eeeek I'm seriously just waiting to get it! I ended up with an oversupply while she was in the NICU because they had me feed, pump, then supplement with every feeding. Her comfort nursing is basically having the same effect. She eats until she is full, then wants to nurse to sleep and I will continue to have let downs while she is comfort nursing and she will just continue to swallow until she eventually throws up. Then my body gets the message to make more milk, and I do. Its totally nuts.
  • I pumped a total of 26 oz today. My boobs are so engorged!

  • I've pumped 46 oz today and done regular feeding all day...I didn't even realize it was that much until I just checked my app :-S
  • Whoa I thought I had a lot!!! With my first son, I was lucky to get an ounce each time so I thought that was a lot!
