Baby allergic to protein in breastmilk!?

so my son started having really bad tummy aches and acid reflux a few weeks ago. Per his pediatrician I changed his formula to alimentum he was having even worse acid reflux with that and we recent switched him to good start gentle.. He's doing better but the pediatrician has told me to stop breast feeding... That he has a protein allergy and it must be my breast milk. Wth!? I haven't heard of that. I haven't breast fed him for about a week and half now and it's killing me. I'm so depressed and sad that I can't breast feed my baby . Has anyone heard of this before??

Re: Baby allergic to protein in breastmilk!?

  • If baby has a milk protein allergy, you can cut out milk and soy from your diet. No need to stop BF!!!

  • A friend of mine had the same issue when she tried to BF. I'm not sure what the allergy was exactly, but she had to stop BF. I think it's pretty rare as that's the only other time I have heard of it. I'm sorry...it was heartbreaking for my friend and, as someone that had supply issues and had to stop BF, I know how you must feel.
  • Seriously, your ped needs to be clearer and do his or her research. Coming from someone with experience:

Milk and soy proteins are passed into your breastmilk. Even if you stop today, it takes an entire TWO WEEKS for all the milk protein in your body to be gone. Then, it takes an additional TWO WEEKS for any residual milk protein to leave your baby's body. If you want to continue breast feeding, you absolutely can. You can opt to eliminate milk and soy or start with just milk and see what happens. Even though it takes a full 4 weeks of no milk to be "all clear", you should see results within a few days of eliminating milk yourself. As long as you're eliminating it all (milk, butter, cheese, etc. and any processed foods that contain dairy).

  • I stopped with my first because he has all kinds of allergies - milk, soy, egg, peanut. His signs were apparent at 2 weeks of breastfeeding, I tried diet elimination for myself (eliminated milk, did not know about his allergies at this point) and continued for about 4 more weeks but he was so unhappy, screamed after feeds for hours on end, diaper rash, eczema and reflux. So we had to switch to nutramigen...wow, different kid immediately. I'm almost 4 weeks into breastfeeding my 2nd and haven't had the signs the 1st one had (yet). Praying it doesn't happen and I can continue and he won't have allergies, although it has made the 19 month old the healthiest toddler I know lol best of luck!!!
  • Mine has the same milk protein allergy, it's not YOUR milk he's allergic to it's dairy in your diet that's being passed through your breast milk. It takes forever to eliminate it, 2 weeks as others have said, but it's totally worth it! No need to quit breastfeeding!!! Your ped should be fired, that's awful advice for a new mama!!!
  • My first had it and I had to eliminate dairy/soy and he did well...we did eventually wean to Alimentum at 8 months old. My baby now is showing signs as she has reflux, and major gas and discomfort. I cut out dairy and did see an improvement and now I am going to cut out soy to see if it improves further. I took her to a pediatric gastro (the same one my son saw) and he advised to do this. If formula is needed I will use Nutramigen or Alimentum. Hoping the diet changes work.
