Also a FTM here but I've been told to find something that can double as your purse so you don't have to carry around both. Mine has a portable changing pad that rolls up very small- I'm hoping that will help me out on the go.
I love the Vera Bradley diaper bags. They are so spacious and have pockets for everything! With DD I had a Walmart bag for two weeks and it wasn't big enough. This time I'm getting a microfiber bag from Vera Bradley. Almost all of them come with the changing pad too!
You need a bag to haul about your baby's stuff. But it doesn't have to be a diaper bag. You can use a spacious tote with plenty of pockets, a backpack, or whatever works for you.
I personally like diaper bags because they usually come with a changing pad and there are pockets specifically designed for stuff like bottles.
I registered for the skip hop forma backpack in black and plan to use the front pocket as a "mommy pocket" to replace my purse. I love the look of the bag.
When they get older, a tote or something is fine, but I like all the sections and pockets of a diaper bag and the one I got has a changing pad attached too. I got Petunia Picklebottom boxy backpack that someone mentioned above. I always see them for almost half off at Nordstrom or Nordstrom Rack, although I got mine from Zulily when they were running a sale. Also, I would recommend getting the coated one so it can wipe clean.
fawndesign.com - beautiful, classy and doubles as a purse. I've been practicing using it with my two year (even tho she really only requires snacks at this age) and it's been the best investment ever!!
I didn't use a diaper bag with my first, so you don't really NEED one. It's convenient tho.
I got a petunia pickle bottom. Obviously I haven't used it yet but I like all the pockets and how stylish it looks. I got an amazing deal during an outlet sale.
I love the Honest Co everything tote and their city backpack. I have the backpack as of now but think I will need a bag as well I'm personally not into the patterned diaper bags--they are adorable but just not for me!
I would suggest a diaper bag for sure. We got the skip hop that a PP mentioned earlier, but in grey. It's nice because it's not huge but easily fits a package of wipes, a dozen diapers, burp rags, a couple outfits and more with no problem.... and it's gender neutral so my husband has no qualms about carrying it around. We are not doing the whole mommy and daddy diaper bag thing... it seems like too much hassle as opposed to sharing!
Im a stm and for my first we used the "Dude diaper bag" which was okay...I personally wanted something bigger. For a baby you want plenty of diapers, wipes, cream, bottles, formula, extra clothes, etc so for me a small bag did not work until my daughter was older. I recently purchased a large Vera Bradley bag. Its very cute and will have plenty of space for everything!
a diaper bag is a must for me. There is really a ton of stuff you need if you are out with the baby. You never know when baby might have a blow out or vomit all over everything. you will be glad you are prepared. I needed a good size bag with lots of compartments. I don't have anything fancy or expensive and hubby doesn't mind carrying it around if needed.
A close friend recommended a bookbag over a diaper bag- easier to carry, better weight distribution, less aching shoulders, etc. I'm putting a Vera Bradley bag on our registry!
FTM here. I heard Skip Hop is a good brand. I bought a Kate Spade Stevie Baby Bag from the outlet store. I have yet to use it but I love it! It comes with a changing pad and lots of pockets.

I ordered one from timi and lesli it's more pricey but it looks like an actual purse. Once a year my husband buys me a designer hand bag. Since I won't be needing that and I will be needing a diaper bag I guess this is my designer bag
This is baby number five for me and I've had several diaper bags.
For this new little one I got my first Timi and Leslie bag and I LOVE it! It's so stylish and doesn't look like a diaper bag which I love because I will use it even after baby is grown. It even comes with a cute little wristlet so you can put your money and cards and everything in there. I just love it!
My MIL told me her mom was getting us a Vera diaper bag so I never looked for one. When we got it, it's actually the size of a small purse. I decided we will use that one as his "going to nana's" bag. I'm still going to need a much larger one. I love the suggestions you ladies have given!
We went with the Jujube BFF! It's very similar to the Boxy Backpack but JJB's are machine washable and PPB's are not so that was the ultimate deciding factor! I got mine used on a buy sell site and after a trip through the washing machine you can't tell it's been used at all. Quite a few pockets, easy to open/close, pocket for wallet and keys, change pad in its own, easy to reach pocket and thermal lined bottle pockets. Watch some videos on YouTube, there are tons of comparison videos and they are really helpful!
Lily Jade makes an insert so you can use any large bag, definitely worth looking into if you if you can't find a specific diaper bag that you like! They also have really pretty diaper bags too! Marc Jacobs and Kate Spade have beautiful diaper bags as well. I'm a bag and shoe freak (thanks to my aunt!) and she got me a Gucci diaper bag, which is something I NEVER would have spent the money on but it is so gorgeous!!
We went non-traditional and bought a leather hiking backpack. (I linked to amazon, but bought mine on ebay for less money). It has LOTS of pockets (5 on the front, one on the back, 2 side pockets for bottles, and the inside is divided for electronics).
Why a backpack? I have back/shoulder issues so I knew I wanted a backpack rather than some heavy tote that was going to make me all kinds of lopsided and get dropped repeatedly with a baby. A backpack is best for weight distribution. Of course, it needed to have a lot of pockets, cuz baby.
Why leather? DH is going to be carrying it a lot and didn't want anything girly, but if I was going to be carrying it I didn't want it to be cheap. Leather will last a long time, grow with our kid, and adapt for roadtrips and college. (we are having a boy)
I am torn between going the cheaper, more easily-identified-as-diaper-bag route and buying the Perry Mackin Harper in black, and taking it up a level with something that looks more purse-like and buying the Storksak Lucinda.
Right now, I am leaning towards the Lucinda. It would be a major splurge - have actually never spent more than $80 on a purse before, and always own only one bag at a time - but I REALLY want something that can last me through three or four kids (this is our first) and about ten years of use. And if I'm going that route, I need leather.
FTM here as well, but the two mothers of my six nephews highly recommended the jujube BFF so that is what I went with. Easy to clean, opens up so you can actually see, lots of pockets and features.
Another tip they gave me was to make sure to get a diaper bag with a light colored liner. The ones with dark colored liners can easily turn into "black holes" and be difficult to find things in sometimes.
I'm considering just getting one of those backpack/purses from target and using it as a diaper bag... Any STM think this will be fine? Or should I go with something bigger?
I had no idea the designer diaper bag trend was so huge. I don't even know what a Kate spade or Michael kors or Gucci purse look like let alone their diaper bags!! So needless to say this thread is a very interesting read for me. Where I am from everyone uses like a Vera Bradley bag or 31 purse tote. I got a used Cinda B diaper bag from a garage sale for $10 and was ecstatic about that!
A friend of mine sewed me one. It's a messenger bag. Brown corduroy with some cute yellow fabric as a liner. She included a hand-sewn waterproof changing pad and a waterproof wet bag, too. It's not the most stylish thing but it's beautifully made and was so thoughtful!
If you're looking for something that doesn't quite look or function like a diaper bag, there are a lot of bookbag diaper bags out there. They basically look and function like a a backpack (some even have a laptop sleeve etc) but also have some specialized pockets for wipes or an insulated pocket for food or bottles that might be useful. It might be a happy medium between needing something to carry baby stuff but not wanting a diaper bag. Or you could just put an insulated bag/lunch box in a backpack you already have.

Edit: @babyhansen15 , thanks for the heads up about the insert! That may just save my life if I don't wind up going with the Lucinda!
I love some of the name brand diaper bags out there but I just can't get over the sticker price.
