I've heard that the first poop after giving birth can be really difficult and painful. Have any of you already-moms experienced this? If so, any advice on making it easier?
Yes, it was painful but I had forgotten to take my stool softener. As PP said, take the stool softener, drink plenty of liquids and eat high fiber food and you'll be fine.
With my first I had a ton of inside stitches (none outside) and my first poop was very painful. After having My second and third kid the first poop wasn't that bad but my second poop was like giving birth again. Deffinetly take the stool softners. I also used my peri bottle with warm/hot water to help aid the process. I'll be honest it sucks
It was an awful experience for me! I will definitely ask for stool softeners while I'm still in the hospital this time. I don't remember them giving me any the first time.
As others have said, religiously take those stool softeners and drink plenty of fluid. For me I was afraid to go and thought it would be worse given the stitches I had in the lady bits from pushing out DS, but it really wasn't that bad.
Stool softeners, fluids, fruit and if it takes longer than 2ish days try glycerin suppositories. I had an impaction after 6 says without pooping even 2 suppositories didn't help. I had to have an enema. X_X
My OB gave me a suppository (4 at once actually) after he stitched me up. I had absolutely no issues with pooping! My first one was within hours of delivery and there was absolutely no pain. I was also on IV fluids for like 12 hours after the birth though so I was well hydrated on top of that. I had very poor control over those muscles for the first 2 weeks after giving birth actually so if I suddenly felt the urge I had to run to the bathroom. I nearly pooped myself a few times.
Being honest it was the worst part of the whole thing and my epidural didn't work! I was constipated though and very dehydrated. I actually had to pull and help it along. (TMI, I know!) that said, I plan to start the stool softeners November 1 (due the 20th!) and drink a ton of water!!!
I was lucky enough not have stitches and it wasn't too bad... But my biggest advice would be not to worry about it yet and make it a "thing!"The psychological worry may make it harder to go, my best friend was so scared it was going to hurt- that she just couldn't do it. As all of the above have said- softners and fibre and keep calm!!!
Stool softeners and lots of fruit will help. It was a few days before I went but only because I had been throwing up for 2 days in labor and cleaned myself out.
I don't remember the actual poo, I just remember being terrified to poo. Either I blocked it out or it wasn't that bad. What I do remember was peeing... I tore slightly up so I was straight peeing on an open wound. The peri bottle and dermaplast numbing spray I took from the hospital were life savers!
Both times it wasn't an issue.. Didn't hurt. They give you stool softeners. I had a 2nd degree tear and didn't notice. Don't stress about it, completely pointless to worry about it now.
It's scary because it feels like a dynamite went off in your vagina for the first week Post partum.....I actually feel like post birth was way more painful than the pregnancy, labor, or actual birth. I was terrified to have a bowel movement or to even go pee! I ended up with a UTI because I was too terrified to attempt to pee and had a bruised urethra. I took a ton of stool softeners and pooping was fine, but peeing was really painful for me and that lasted 4 weeks.
Take some miralax in your bags to the hospital and start mixing it in your water as soon as labor is done ... You will have no pain and discomfort and it doesn't cause gases so you won't feel like a balloon ( some stool softeners do)
This is the worse part for me, but I have C-sections so painkillers and stuff don't help with pooping. Miralax is amazing though. I take it right away now and no issues. So glad after 2nd C-section the nurse recommended it.
Keep some milk of magnesia in the fridge - a shot of that will help immensely. Lots of fluids, fiber. Mostly, when it's time, just sit on the toilet and let it happen - don't push hard, blow out while you're pushing. Go slow. I'm a pelvic floor therapist - you can do it!

Oh gwaaaard yeah the peeing! I forgot that. I didn't tear I just had grazes but they stung to the point of tears for the first few weeks. I had to run a tap when I was peeing to encourage me to go haha and I used a new rubber duck I'd bought for my son as it gave the right amount of pressure to help )
I had a c section so from the pain mess it was horrible, like really bad. Stool softness did not work. My hubby had a surgery before and the painmeds did the same thing. Only thing that we would that works great is this. You can find it at cvs, drug store, sometimes even dollar store. Trust me you will want to have it on hand, esp if you have a c section.
I was so afraid to push that I didn't go until like a week after and when it was literally forcing it's way out. I went in and put my baby on a pad on the floor and basically pushed another baby out.
Thank goodness nobody was home because I screamed through the whole thing. I was so afraid that I would rip my stitches since I tore a little bit giving birth
Nobody told me about taking softeners or anything afterwards or how bad it would hurt. This time I know better! I am going to stock up on all of that stuff this weekend when I get my hospital bag ready!
I had an emergancy c-section and my 3 day stay in the hospital they brought me coffee or black tea every meal and kept giving me stool softeners. I went the night I was finally home and I remember being scared but it didn't hurt. I also suffered really bad hemroids while pregnant that made me cry when I had to go so it was nice that it didn't hurt for once.
Do you also poop during? I've heard this rumor and it terrifies me to no end.
You can and apparently it is fairly common (luckily I didn't because the idea bothered me, too). But the nurses are so used to it that I was told they don't even respond. They just remove it. You have so much on your mind and your body is doing a lot of the pushing for you that come time you probably won't care. It seems like one of those things that people worry about before hand and then stop caring about when labor and pushing pain trumps everything. But... I could be wrong as I didn't actually experience pooping during delivery.
I did with all 3, I went over a year thinking I didn't with my last one but my sister just informed me that I did.... So it's so common it's really no big deal.
Now I'm more scared of pooping during delivery lol... But really some of these stories are terrifying lol it makes me nervous for the pain after he comes out!!!
Yes - had a hard time in the bathroom after c-section and painkillers. I had to take iron supplements also for being anemic post op. Colace was my friend as well as preparation H wipes.... Doesn't sound glamorous but I plan on having them on hand this time around.
Also - definitely went during early labor (~7cm)/after epidural. Nurses didn't believe me when I had to go....they also didn't believe that my epidural didn't work....."it just feels like you have to go"...they said. No I did have to go thanks. However, got it out of the way before active labor..... However, I have to say - you aren't going to care much at that point. Everyone is all up in your business...so to speak. Leave your modesty and dignity
I had a c section and the first few poops were horrid! On top of that I can't take stool softners, of any kind. They all leave me in a ball on the floor from stomach pains (even ones the doctors have suggested)
So I stick to a lot of fruit and fiber foods (i go through boxes of fiber one cookies) and coffee..
Re: Poop question for the repeat-mommies
Baby Boy born on 1/14/13

Breastfeeding on the other hand ... That hurt.
