Useless

Having my little girl in the nicu makes me feel so useless. The only thing that makes me feel better is knowing that I am pumping milk for her. My doctor has prescribed me zoloft bc I keep having crying fits. But it's so hard to go see her when I'm constantly having to deal with nurses and I just now got my iv out so I can wash my hands properly. Gonna try and read to her today. I'm a big talker so I Kom now she's got to miss my voice. I sure miss her!

  • I'm sorry. :( You're in a tough spot. You're clearly a great mom already. Just take things day by day. This too shall pass. Hope reading to her goes well today. I'm sure she'll enjoy hearing your voice and feeling you be close by.
  • I'm so sorry. I can only imagine how tough that must be.  Don't ever feel you're useless.  Far from true, you're doing all you can and are great!  Hang in there .  Reading is a great idea. I'm sure she'll love it. Sending you lots of hugs and positive vibes.  Hope everything goes as smoothly as possible from here on and you get to take that little lady home before you know it.
  • Hang in there!  You are doing everything you can for your little girl.  She is in good hands in the NICU.  Before you know it, she will be stronger and healthier and be able to come home.  Please take care of yourself as well.  I'm sure it must be hard.  We are here for you!!
  • I'm so sorry you are having to deal with this, and feel so useless. Know that you're not - your baby needs you just as much now as ever. You're doing a great job, and will continue to be her best support! Sending you hugs.
  • Oh sweetie! She's so lucky to have you! Being in the NICU she is in a great place. She will be super close to you. I was a 26 weeker and spent a lot of time in the NICU as a result, I'm super close to my parents. Your little gal is going to be out before you know it. I know she will love you reading to her
  • I'm sorry! Of course you are crying!! I would be too. I'd be a mess. I'm glad you finally got your IV out. Hopefully you can get some kangaroo care in. Good luck, momma! You are doing great!
  • Talk to a NICU doc or nurse. Our hospital requires it when you're discharged so you can vent your feelings with someone who is an expert. There are also parent groups who have done it before that can help you. Our little man has a couple more weeks in the NICU and the staff has been very informative and helpful for us.

It's not easy. But she's in good hands.
  • It's so hard to have them in the NICU, even though you know it's the best for them. My DD was in the NICU for meconium aspiration for 15 days. It gets easier as you go along, but it sucks at the same time.

    - As soon as baby is ok to be held, hold her skin to skin.
    - Keep up that pumping, you are making an important stash of milk for her future. See if you can pump at her bedside, it helps increase your milk production.
    - Ask the nurses what you can do to take care of her, how you can help. Maybe there's not much you can do at the minute but soon you should be able to help out more. I helped wash DD's head with the nurses help to remove the gunk from the sensors, we clipped nails, and started changing diapers and even paying attention to the monitors.
    - If your nurse is mean or you just don't have a good connection ask the head nurse or a nurse you do like about switching. Ask what their policy is. When DD was in NICU we could request to have primary nurses, nurses we liked and who liked us, and then they were assigned to DD every day they were on. We could also request to not have a nurse. We didn't know about this for a few days until one of the nurses who we really liked told us.
    - Remember to take a break and leave the NICU to rest and recharge at times. It is amazingly tough to do nearly nothing all day sitting there next to your baby. Go get lunch and go for a walk outside, or take a nap somewhere.
