Im at my mums house and looking after my 2 nephews as well as my son my son is three .. one of my nephews is 3 and the other 4... since breakfast at 8... both of my nephews have asked for and had 5 packets of crisps 3 chocolate bars 2 apples 2 biscuits a lolly a piece of toast a barney bear and a yogurt. .. and they're still asking for more... I've rang my mum and she just said give them it if they ask... my son has had an apple since breakfast as he's waiting for lunch.... the 3 year old is still in nappies and poo is going everywhere (my son has been potty trained since before he was 2) ... the four year old can't take himself to the toilet or pull his trousers up or down ... they can't open anything by them self's. ... I've asked them to tidy their mess and they told me gran does it so they don't have too.... but my son started tiding and they were telling him not to either..... they have been on one thing or another all day ... is this normal or not ... I'm pregnant and running around like a jerk.... my son is so set in a routine for everything I come round here and think it's a mad house.... mum's not back till later... dunno what to do with them ... help plz x

  • I think this is more than just different parenting styles... as for the 4 year old will he not be going to school this year?  Isn't that kind of a thing he needs to know to do?

I think their mom/your mom must coddle them and give into their whim.... I would stand my ground and make clear as an adult what you says goes not what they think or what other people do... but I am kind of a hard ass like that

This. When I am in charge, my rules go. (And you can better your bottom that they will be the ones cleaning!)

  • all I can say is, may the force be with you.
I don't have that sort of energy or patience.
    Children in numbers terrify me.
  • My 3 nephews are all older than the kids you described, and they still ask for their mom to get them drinks - this drives me nuts as maybe the 5 year old needs help pouring, but the older ones are totally capable of getting their own drinks. They also eat constantly - this is totally normal with all ages of boys.

  • My sister in-law did everything for her kids including wiping her 6 year old sons butt. My husband and I used to joke about the Adam Sandler movie Big Daddy where the kid says "but I can wipe my own a$$". Coddling is not the best idea, as my family learned when my sister in-law died. Those kids had to instantly learn how to do things for themselves, which they were plenty old enough to! I agree with pp, let them know that your rules are what they have to follow while they are in your care. Maybe make cleaning up a race or game of basketball. Have them line up with trash and try to make it in the "net".
  • My boys eat all the time they are just constantly hungry, but those boys should be cleaning both of my boys started cleaning up their toys when they were 9 months old they also know to only take one thing out and play with it and then when they are done with it they need to clean it up before taking anything else out. Your the adult if no one else is there they need to listen and do as you say.
  • Thanks guys it actually made me I'll yesterday running round after them coz my mum said they need it... been up docs this morning and he's said to relax for the next few days... have had temp of 39.3 so really not well .... I dunno how or why my mum does it for them ... building a rod.... so happy with how I'm bringing up my son lol makes me realise how lucky I am tbh xxx
