Hearing the heartbeat question.

Hi ladies, I can't seem to find an answer to this! I know you can see a HB on an ultrasound and hear it with a Doppler but I don't understand how you hear it on an ultrasound. When I saw my LOs HB I didn't hear anything. I wonder was it too early or do some ultrasounds not allow you to hear it? TIA.

Re: Hearing the heartbeat question.

  • That's totally normal. My practice doesn't let you hear the heartbeat on the ultrasound machine until you are over due.

Thanks for replying. Do you know why they won't let you hear it?

  • Some machines have sound capabilities, some don't.
  • With my first I was told it was too strong at the early scan.

Also, I read that early on, the heart is so tiny it's not even really making a noise, so the machine will imitate the heartbeat sound to the rhythm of the beats per minute that the scan is showing. I can't remember where I read that, but I remember it being a credible source. So in those instances, it's not even the baby's heart making the sound.

  • Our doctor told us at our 7 week ultrasound that they don't Doppler the HR on ultrasound anymore because they found out it wasn't necessary and possibly not good for the growing babe! You could definitely see the heart beating just didn't hear the HR!

The machine at my doctor's office does sound for the heartbeat during a transvaginal ultrasound. I have no idea if it's mimicked sound or actual, though. Never thought about it, but when they did it, I saw the graph showing each beat along with the sound. They then took a section of that to measure and gave me the rate.
