MIL Giving baby Water?

so for the first time , DH and i decided to have a couple of hours out and go watch a movie. We took the baby to my MILs house. When we came back she mention that she gave the baby a bit of water. He's 6 weeks old btw. He's breastfeed and formula. I've googled about Giving baby water and I read mostly bad comments. :-S

Re: MIL Giving baby Water?

  • There's no need to give a newborn water. He gets all the hydration he needs from breast milk or formula. I would tell your MIL exactly that and remind her that it's your child and you'd like for her to follow your care instructions.

  • Yes giving water at this age can be dangerous. I would be pretty ticked off but I'm assuming she just didn't know any better.
  • It can throw their sodium levels off balance if given enough. I've seen this several times bring a nurse and working in a pediatric hospital. I think it's a generational thing. My MIL asked me if they told me to give mine water as well.
  • My mom asked "are you giving him water?" The other day bc LO strains so hard to poop. It has to just be something they use to do. Now when DD was little, I was young and lived with my mom and grandma. We gave her water but I didn't know any better and that was 9 yrs ago.
  • We gave our daughter a little squirt of it because it is a natural stool softener
  • My LO is nearly 6 weeks, and I give him water when he has hiccups, and when it's hot out.
My mother did the same thing with all 3 of us. I could read up on it..
But I choose not to. Plus my family doctor said in moderation it's fine. It's better then gripe water.
  • I was told that breast milk is like %86 water
  • Giving water to your baby is dangerous. It can lower their sodium and can cause death. Huge no no. Babies don't need water. All of their needs come from breastmilk or formula for the first 6 months. I'd be livid if anyone gave my baby anything other than my breastmilk in a bottle.
  • So my mom did ask me if we were giving DD water. I told her no because it isn't necessary or recommended. She said we should give her water with a little honey! I then had to explain that you aren't supposed to give honey for at least a year. So it's definitely a generational thing.

On the other hand, I did read that it is OK to give a small amount to help with hiccups.
  • Please do not give your baby water.   If you use formula please make sure it is mixed properly with the right amount of water. Using extra water to "stretch" the formula or giving water can lead to low sodium levels which can cause seizures and brain damage.
  • I was refusing to give our DS water, but when he was painfully constipated last week, our pediatrician's office told us to add an oz of nursery water to one of his formula bottles. It just helped soften his stools to make it easier to go.
  • My baby is 4 weeks old and was constipated from week 2-3 was straining alot. I mentioned it to the health visitor and recommended giving a little water in between feeds. Not sure if it helped but my gran and aunt mentioned giving water to for constipation.
  • When I got home I checked the diaper bag and I found one of his bottles filled with water... 7oz .. I know she didn't use nursery water either. I'm also guessing it's a generational thing because my parents had mention giving babies water is ok. :| as far as I know my baby doesn't have a problem pooping. But I mentioned it to DH and he said he will let her know we don't want him drinking water
  • Curious what is "nursery water"?

  • it's in the same section as regular water. and they have one with and with out fluoride (purple lable is with out)
  • My little brother who is 26 years old now was born in Germany. The German hospital sent my mom home with these tiny bottles of baby safe water and told her to give him one a week to ensure he would take a bottle and help soften stool. I had a friend recently give birth in the German hospital also and this is no longer the practice. I think this is the perfect example of generational differences.
