Breastfeeding

Comfort nursing.

My LO is 5 weeks old. Today I've been putting him to the breast every hour and making sure he stays awake for at least ten minutes on each side before just letting him nurse. I can't tell when he's just sucking for comfort and when he's actually eating. This is why I put him on every hour today. If he's not on my breast he's basically been crying all day. How do I get away from the comfort nursing? I've tried three different types of pacifiers and he won't take them. He won't even just suck on my finger like he would before. Any advice? I did even try gas drops today even though I really don't think that's the problem.

Re: Comfort nursing.

  • He is probably about to go through a growth spurt and is signaling your body to make more milk. There is a big growth spurt at 6 wks. After about 6-8 wks their feedings will space out, but right now he is still very little. Sometimes you have days like this, this too shall pass. You are doing a great job!

  • Definitely sounds like a growth spurt. My LO did the same thing. Just nurse and cuddle that sweet baby b/c they are only little for so little long. Good job Momma!
