Girl name frustrations

Way before I became pregnant I thought Charlotte was such cute name for a girl. Then it kept moving up on all the name charts so I ruled it out. That being said, I live in a small town in the south where everyone is still hung up on trendy, made up names so there are no babies that I personally know of named this. I also went on a Ella kick (family name) but then changed my mind. My first name is Kathryn which I love and I go by Katy. If this wasn't my name I would love Kathryn and Kate for short for my baby. Just calling her Kathryn is also an option. I feel like I am constantly searching for names and literally have seen everything. I definitely want something classic but not old fashioned sounding. Can I get some opinions and/or recommendations on all of the above?

Re: Girl name frustrations

  • Charlotte, Ella, and Kathryn are all fine names. I know a couple girls named after their mothers and I don't side eye it as I don't side eye male Jrs, but I like Charlotte the best from your list.

  • I like Charlotte, but I understand frustration. Ella is nice too but all Elle derivatives are so common now - I'd move away from that one for sure. Cathryn is a very strong female name and I've always liked it, but it's not soft like Charlotte.

    Maybe consider
    Blythe
    Julianne
    Vera
    Clara
    Emmeline
    Charlize
    Noelle

  • I still love the name Charlotte.

  • I'd side-eye a girl with the same name as her mom, but I'm Jewish and in our traditions we don't name children after living relatives so take that with a grain of salt.

I think Charlotte is a lovely name, though it's definitely increasing in popularity. I'm over the Ella's/Emma's etc.

    Other ideas:

    Abigail
    Amelia
    Claire
    Eleanor
    Eloise
    Scarlett
    Sylvia

  • Thanks ladies! You're definitely making me lean further towards Charlotte. :)
  • I love Charlotte. It's getting more popular but I don't think it would ever hit the Jennifer/Jessica popularity of the 80s and 90s, so it's not like there would be six in her class at school.
  • I still love Charlotte too. It's a beautiful name and if you love it, you should use it :)

  • I don't mind Charlotte. I would expect a popularity spike since the royal baby has that name now. You can also search name popularity by state to see if your area matches the national popularity.
I see nothing wrong with naming a kid after her mother, especially if they go by different names but even if not.
I'm surprised nobody above suggested Elizabeth or any of its many variations/nicknames. It seems to fit with Charlotte and Catherine/Kathryn. Maybe check the royal family tree to see if others in that style are to your liking.
  • When we were searching we used the Social Security Admin names list & looked at names from the 20s through 40s. Nothing over the top 100 was our original criteria.  Also, I'm named after my mother, only our names are reversed - her middle name is my first & my middle is her first.

I love Charlotte, and considered that for a bit too.  We went with Dorothy, but considered Matilda, Charlotte, Amelia, Marjorie & Evelyn
  • I love Charlotte! I think it's too Classic a name to ever be dated by popularity.

  • @LC122 My mom, my sister and my niece all have Elizabeth somewhere in their names. I think Charlotte Elizabeth is very pretty but I think that's one of the royal baby's middle names. What can I say, we have similar taste. Lol
  • @rmckenna yes I have used that site and it has probably been more helpful than anything else!
