20 week scan-nasal bone problem

I went for my 20 week scan today and they were unable to find the nasal bone and also said that he has a calcium buildup in his heart. (That doesn't prevent the heart from functioning properly)
My original blood work screening put me 1 in 100,000 for a DS baby. Now she says 1 in 10,000 but Everything has been perfect so far. And he is developing perfectly anAtomically.
I'm meeting with the genetics counselor in the morning to discuss things in detail more. In the mean time, I'm sitting here in tears.
It's confusing to hear he's perfect and developing normally for weeks and weeks and now out of nowhere we need to see a genetic specialist.

  • Thoughts and prayers that everything turns out positively.
  • Def thinking of you and your little one! At my anatomy scan they also identified an EIF which is the calcium buildup. I can not speak for your situation since it is different than mine however with the Calcium buildup my OB said this is very commonly found in healthy babies and I hope this is the case for your little babe!

They found the same thing at my 12 week NT scan. I asked them jokingly but seriously if the lack of nasal bone could be in part due to the fact that I was Asian because if they saw my DH and mil they both don't have nasal bones. (I crack jokes when I'm nervous) We all laughed because I was part joking but they said ethnicity can play a part in it. So I did alot of primary literature search. In the setting of absent nose bridge, Found that risk of DS with absent nasal bone is really low. The risk of DS is higher with higher NT # (greater than 3 I forget the exact number), higher with specific ethnicities (more with Caucasian, least with Asians and African Americans. They found AA had the Most % of absent nasal bone found on the ultrasound ) and highest with shorter crown-to-rump length.

My baby's NT was 1.1 and I'm Asian so I wasn't too worried. I was still nervous though. So I understand.

I did the materniti21 test and it came back negative.

Sending you positive thoughts. Hope this helps

  • Sending positive thoughts your way. The geneticist will probably offer you further testing. Hopefully that will give you some answers. Please keep us updated.
  • Thank you all for your kind words, thoughts and prayers!! It's truly comforting to know there is a community of such kind women to turn to for support and encouragement <3

Went back and looked at our original NT screening photo and you can clearly See his nasal bone and I'm pretty sure bones done just disappear, so I'm comforting myself by thinking it's just a bad screening picture!
  • I'm glad to hear this update, that was going to be my question... is if you had a previous scan that shows a nasal bone. It seems like if they didn't see a nasal bone in the NT scan, they definitely would've raised a red flag at that time and let you know that they didn't see it. Hopefully it was just an oversight in the last ultrasound. We will continue to send positive thoughts and prayers your way.
  • *update*
We went to meet with the genetics counselor this morning. She told me my original screening results 1st tri blood work + 2nd tri blood work + the NT scan put me at 1 in 100,000 for DS. The soft markers increased the risk slightly but said I was still very very low. Offered me the amnio and a blood test.

Part of me feels like this whole thing was just a way to push unnecessary worry and testing onto us... The genetics counselor was employed by the lab company that provides the tests after all. Just seems.. Off

Ironically, my ob double scheduled my 20 weeks scan at two different places, so I'm having another one done at my normal oB-gyn office! Will decide about the blood test after that next Tuesday!!

Thanks again for all your thoughts and prayers <3</p>

Is your insurance going to cover two /0 week scans??? Just curious so that you don't incur a huge bill you weren't expecting?
  • They will offer you the blood work regardless of if they have the relationship or not with the company . I got offered the blood work when she saw no nasal bone and the MD had no relationship. I asked if she did because it would have been cheaper! Lol there's alot of doctors with relationships with progenity. If yours does is $25 Co pay for that test. Mine didny so I did the materniti21 test which even after insurance as a diagnostic lab was $150 ish. My husband and I did it just to not worry about the what ifs throughout the whole pregnancy and to have definite answers. We wanted to be prepared for special programs if our baby has Ds. Definitely your choice though. Doesnt sound like it's a problem though! So happy for you. The blood work took one week to come back and that was so nerve-wracking to wait that long!
  • Fingers crossed it's just a fluke in how baby's face was angled. I hope you get the answers you are looking for at your 20 week!

  • At our 20-week scan, there was a concern about the nasal bone. We’re awaiting further tests and guidance from our doctor. Staying positive and hopeful for good news.
