FTM 2 weeks left and I need breast/bottle feeding advice!!

I have purchased the avent gift set with 5 9 ounce bottles and 1 4 ounce bottle and I have a munchkin latch 4 ounce that I have. I will be breast feeding for the first couple weeks but I will be pumping as well.. Will I need more 4 ounce bottles or should I just use the bigger ones. I am concerned about the air in the bottles! and how long can you keep breast milk stored in the fridge??

  • I'm a FTM too but www.kellymom.com is an awesome resource all about breastfeeding and has the guidelines about storing breastmilk. I'd also wait to buy more bottles to see what your little one likes. Some babies prefer certain bottles. That will also give you some time to figure out what exactly you need (and how often you want to be washing bottles :) ).

  • Also always store breast milk in the coldest part of the fridge/freezer.  (usually the bottom in back.)

  • I would stick with the smaller bottles at first.  You can always buy the bigger ones if needed.

One thing that I learned this time around is that breastfed babies don't necessarily eat more than formula fed babies.  Formula fed babies tend to eat more as they grow older.  However, breast fed babies may not need to increase their intake because as time goes on, the quality in your breast milk changes to meet their needs.  Many babies will take the same amount of breast milk at 9 months as they did at 3 months.
  • I went back to work at 10.5 months, and even then I used 4-5oz bottles. Especially for freezing milk, it's better to have to take out a second bottle, than throw away half a bottle.

  • If you want to buy more bottles, Tommee Tippee is great for breast fed babies too. I bought those and Avent too
  • Baby will transition out of the smaller bottles so soon that it's really not worth buying too many. I started with 4oz, just because I like the size better! I actually bought more of the larger ones later on because I was using them so often.

I do like the tommee tippee ..they nipples are similar to avent ones

  • You should talk to a lactation consultant about pumping early. They generally recommend that you not pump for 3-4 weeks because it can either create an oversupply and lead to mastitis or can affect how much milk is available for baby. Obviously if you are going back to work quickly you may not be able to avoid it, but if not you may want to consider if it's the best thing for your supply.
