High-Risk Pregnancy

Shortening of the cervix

I went for a routine ultrasound today that I have every 2 weeks at the hospital. They also did an internal ultrasound and noticed my cervix has shortened double in size. I was sent straight to the birthing suite for a doctor to look for a closer inspection... He said my cervix has shortened but is still closed. I'm only 20 weeks and he said if I go into pre-term labour and before 24 weeks they won't resuscitate my twins. I'm so scared cause the doctor said there is little they can do to prevent this but they will monitor it closely (every week).

Has anyone been through similar situation and made it further than 30 weeks? I don't want my twins to come before 32 weeks.

Re: Shortening of the cervix

  • Hi! Did the doctor tell you how short or if you are funneling at all? There are quite a few of us going through similar situations on this board.'
Also, I know the mention of the 24 week mark seems scary but all doctors have to tell their patients that if they have a preterm labor risk. 24 weeks is considered viability.
I know it seems incredibly scary but hang in there! Has the doctor put you on progesterone or discussed cerclage since you are only 20 weeks?

  • Absolutely...and that was a very blunt doctor. Shesh. I'm with @kidcapri100, I'd call and get exact measurements just to know what you're working with. If it's really short and you're/they're really concerned, then I'd make an appointment with a perinatologist. Your cervix is dynamic. At 11 weeks my cervix was 2.9 (but I knew it was short from a LEEP I had in '05). It ended up getting as long as 3.4. When it dropped back down to 2.9, however, they put me on couch potato rest and vaginal progesterone. You don't have much longer until you reach 24 weeks, but you still need exact measurements and a game plan (it didn't sound like he have you one, just something to worry about). If it makes you feel any better I'm 34 weeks as of yesterday, still on couch potato rest and progesterone, but my cervix has been holding strong around 2.6.
  • The doctor said I was 1.8 shortened but the cervix is still closed. I have an appointment at the hospital in 2 days to talk to the doctor. Just scared incase I should be taking it easy, cause I'm still working and doing my normal duties at work. It is worrying.
  • I'm not a doctor, but I would definitely be taking it easy. If you can, sit as much as possible and try to recline a little bit to keep direct pressure off of your cervix. Can you see a specialist? I'm pretty sure they'd put you on bed rest and possibly a cerclage as @kidcapri100 said. My doctor wouldn't give me a cerclage, but she does when women are pregnant with twins. I'd do whatever you feel is best for your babies, regardless of how concerned your doctor is(n't). You're their best advocate right now.
  • Hello I am 15 w also have short cervix measuring only 2 cm pregnant with twins but my doctor wont put a cerclage on me. She says that theres not enough evidence to show that cerclage helps outcome in twin pregnancy so i am also hanging here just keeping my fingera crossed.
