Worried!

I apologize if someone has posted about this before, but I'm not even sure the words to search. Anyway, I just moved and was unpacking a small bathroom tote. I reached in and there was about an inch and a half of fluid-- my jewelry cleanerer had burst open in the tote. I pulled my hand out but tried to quickly pull out a few of the nailpolishes also in the tote and rinsed them off. I'm worried about the cleaner getting on my hands particularly because I have an open cut on my cuticles. Is this an emergency that I need to contact my doctor for - was planning on calling in the am - but if this is something bad it will probably be too late by then. Thank you!

@lwebley I don't typically get a pedicure with jewelry cleaner so I would say yes. Not worried about myself - worried about chemicals in my blood stream going to baby.
  • You're fine. Your baby will be fine.

I realize I said nail polish remover because I was stuck on the pedicure thing!!! My apologies. I meant jewelry cleaner! Similar chemicals and still nothing to worry about just once. Truly.

  • Yeah, I routinely clean my rings. I think it's fine.
  • I guess it depends on what you clean your jewelry with.
  • I'm sure your fine I'd say jewelry cleaner is very low on the list so no need to worry. People clean jewelry all the time it's really not that harsh. Your hand was only in it for a second and you washed it. Baby will be fine.

And I'll give you a heads up ask google this question before you get a lot of mean comments cause not saying your issue wasn't huge but people on here are dealing with bigger issues than jewelry cleaner on their hands. Also your hands have a different texture of skin on them which is why some things can hurt your arm or leg but not necessarily your hands your body is just made that way.

Yes, you are probably going to die. Seriously?? Do you really think it's any different than getting a pedicure?

This. Totally unnecessary and SO rude!!!

  • While I believe jewelry cleaner is a bit of an over the top concern, I've been having weird thoughts lately of horrible things happening to me while I'm pregnant. Like getting beat up or hit by a car. Panic is normal but just don't get too worked up about the small things. If you're not using vegan/chemical free/etc. cosmetics you could potentially be exposing yourself to harsh chemicals daily. Point is, there are chemicals everywhere. Pick & choose....
  • I'm sure you are fine. This is a bit over the top though. There are much bigger things to freak out over.
Hope you calmed down and saw the light.
  • Most of them are just soap and ammonia. All store bought stuff, jewelry stores use the same stuff and a steam machine, not much danger involved. Gems and precious metals are actually able to be damaged by harsh cleaners (which is why you should NEVER wear your jewelry when cleaning).
It's nice to have an expert. :)

I believe it is no worse than cleaning with windex or other common household cleaners without gloves. If you're really worried - invest in some gloves for next time.
  • Agree with PPs that's it's no big deal.  Even though you have a cut on your hand, the likelihood of any getting into your bloodstream is extremely small.  You'd have to freshly cut your hand and then immediately dip it into cleaner for that to be possible.  Even if it somehow did, it would be so dilute in your system that it wouldn't even be able to be measured, let alone reach your baby through the placenta.

  • You're gonna have a looooong road ahead of you. Good luck!
  • I think you'll be fine. My doc told me specifically that things absorbed topically don't go in your blood stream. It's nowhere close to prolonged exposure which is the only thing that should be a problem.

I agree with some of PPs. You've got a whole pregnancy to get through, so you've got to try and temper your worries or it will elevate your stress. That's not that great for baby either.

^wss! If you are really worried you should call your doctor and wait for their response. This is an Internet forum not webmd.

  • A one-time exposure to something like that is harmless. Sorry you're worried! I like natural cleaners and soaps, so I understand the concern, but no need for worry. You're fine!
  • I'm sorry some of these people are making such rude comments. It's completely unnecessary to be so mean, even if they are dealing with worse problems. Why can't mothers just support each other and stop tuning against one another? Everyone has different concerns and there is nothing wrong with that. God cares about you, your concerns, and your child, so just rest in knowing that you can always talk to Him. :)
