OPK Question for Irregular Periods

I'm thinking about buying some Wondfo to pee on all the sticks. Since my periods are irregular (40-49 days), can I only realistically use them while temping? Or can I use a lot of them over a certain period in case of temping fail?

Re: OPK Question for Irregular Periods

  • I'm not sure what you mean by only use them when temping? Are you not temping every day? I think the recommendation is to use OPKs about twice a day beginning a few days before expected O date. If you're irregular, it's kind of a judgement call when to start. I started OPKs early this cycle (CD 8) because this is only my second cycle off BCP and I'm not sure what's up with my cycles yet.

There are a lot of posts on this if you search OPK or OPK timing etc.

  • Because I just had my IUD out in July and wasn't sure when I would O, I started using them on CD 10 once a day until they started to get darker, then I increased to twice day, then when it got really close, I used them 3 times per day.  With 40 - 49 day cycles, maybe start around CD 20?

Sorry if I wasn't clear enough. Words are hard this morning. I just got my BBT thermometer, which is already great, and I'll do my best to be consistent. However, I can already tell some days are going to be off based off based on how I sleep at night. Therefore, I'm concerned that at some points, I may screw up with temping and not truly know when I O, which is why I want the OPKs,. I guess there is just going to be a lot of POAS in my future. Good thing Wondfo isn't too pricy!

  • I started using them everyday because I never really kept track of my cycle. I'm on my third cycle of tracking now and probably don't need them anymore. I plan on just finishing up what I have left and only using them during my fertile week as a secondary precaution.

Just use the OPKs until you feel like you no longer need them.

  • I debated using them this past month but I'm glad that I did because I'm still pretty new to all this.  I O'd on CD 18 last month and am currently on CD 22 and still no definite O according to FF.  But I turned the OPKS for the last 4 days? in a row? So now I'm starting to wonder.

I ordered Wondfos because they are cheaper for more than any other reason at this point than the $1 ones i've been using.

I can see if you've been doing this for 6 months or more you may not need them at that point, especially if things are pretty consistent for you.

Most of the boxes give instructions on what day to start using them so I'd maybe follow those if you are very new to using them.  The $1 store tests said i could/should start using them on CD 12 and in hindsight, I wish i would have.  I started on CD 10 and they were negative up until CD 18?  So, I wasn't "missing" anything for sure.

The clear blue advanced ones though you HAVE to use for a set # of days so it can "track" your levels.
