Has any other mothers gotten a Picc Line?

I was admitted to the hospital Friday evening and told if I can't keep anything down I would need to get a pic line. (I'd had already lost 25lbs) Which of course I had to get one on Monday. (OUCH)

A picc line is like an IV but permently stays in your upper arm until they remove it. It goes in through the vein up the arm, and all the way through until it reaches right outside of the Heart!

Now I'm at home giving myself 2ml of zofran through the picc line by myself every 8 hrs and I also have to put myself on those big bags of fluids daily to stay hydrated.

I must say this pregnancy is far worse than my first! This never happened with my first!!

  • Sorry you are dealing with this. I hope your nausea goes away soon so you can start eating normally. That is rough.
  • Wow, I hope the nausea goes away soon. Sounds horrible :(
  • Wow, hopefully it gets better for you soon!
  • wow! that is some tough stuff!! hopefully things get better!  Is there a specific amount of time you need to be on the pic line?  I was never on a pic line, but I did have to visit the hospital with severe lack of fluids in the second trimester with my DD.  I couldn't keep anything in.  I was on zolfran too--it was a life saver!  Hang in there!

  • I've had a PICC line in the past due to complications of my Crohn's disease. The first doctor who tried to put it in was a horrible person, but the second one got it in the first time no problem! It was kind of annoying to have, but definitely beat getting stuck with needles daily for the meds I was on at the time! I had it for a month or two, I don't remember 100%. I had a visiting nurse come out like once a week to check the line, but I only have a little scar from it on my upper arm; but other than that no sequelae or anything. Good luck!

  • That sucks that you have to have a PICC line! It really beats having to have IV'S as they normally only last 3-4 days and you get to be at home instead of being in the hospital. Just make sure you clean it with alcohol really well every time you use a port for Zofran or the fluids. Just to make sure to prevent infections!
  • So sorry to hear about this. Hopefully you start feeling better soon! I have never even heard of it.
  • I had a PICC line in the past but not for a pregnancy.  It was in place for 6 weeks.  I have a scar from where it was inserted that looks like a tiny circle.  It's super faint and unless I point it out it's not really noticeable.  Good luck and hope it helps!
