Newborn clothes question for STM's

how long did your baby wear newborn clothes? We have about 15+ onesies and 6+ footies and 4 pair pants that we got and I washed. Will I likely use them? Kind of annoyed now I washed them all. But baby is measuring on small side so maybe?

DD was in newborn size clothes for almost 4 months (nb diapers for only 2 or so).  Most babies on DHs side of the family never even fit in newborn clothes, so we hadn't expected her to be so small for that long.

This baby boy is already measuring large, so we'll wait until closer to his due date before buying any new newborn sized clothes.  We may be ok with the gender neutral ones we have from DD (she was a December baby and he is due in November).

You can never know for sure until baby gets here.  I definitely would recommend not buying too many larger size, season specific clothes in advance.
  • Baby was born 7.7 and wore nb clothes for 5 weeks. She gained weight fast and was up 3lbs and in the 95th percentile for length at her one month dr appt. We mostly had to move to 3 month clothes because her nb onesies were not long enough for her.

We moved to size 1 diapers around the same time...more because of her fat little thighs than her waist. You never really know how stuff will fit until the baby is born. We had a lot of nb clothes we didn't use bc all she wore was short sleeved onesies and muslin swaddle blankets...we have hot summers so that's all she needed. We're not even sure how long we'll use 3 month clothes at this point...at 8 weeks the onesies are already getting difficult to snap closed.
  • My first wore newborn for 8 weeks. He was 6lbs13oz at birth and he gained at a normal rate for a breastfed baby, he just ended up being long and skinny rather than chunky. Even at 2.5 his size ranges from 2T-4T depending on brand because he's too skinny for some and too tall for others.

My first wore newborn clothes for a week or two. She was 7lbs 7oz at birth. She was breastfed (through pumping) and supplemented with formula, as she had a really bad case of jaundice. She was a cute, chunky baby. What I did was open a pack or two of onesies and keep the others on packages and see how big baby gets by week 2. Then, return or exchange for 0-3mths if needed. Also keep in mind as those onesies shrink up when dried.

Same with diapers, depending on baby's size, they may not be in newborn size for long. Size 1 diapers start at 8 lbs and are able to hold more than newborn.
  • Even my 9 pound babies wore newborn clothes for a few weeks. Newborns are so scrunched up all the time so since my babies never stretched out, newborn clothes were long enough!
  • Ds1 was 8 lbs 9 oz when he was born and honestly he was super long too, so he only was able to wear newborn size for about 2 weeks. This time I'm skipping the newborn size because ds2 is measuring bigger. =/

  • I was told newborn clothes were a waste of money so I really didn't buy any for my first.  He was 7lb, 5 oz and was swimming in 0-3 size so most of his first months he was wearing the few onsies I had.  I attached a picture of him at 1 month in the going home outfit I bought for him, it was size 0-3 and he was swimming in it for the first few months.

  • We were in newborn clothes for about 3 months. Barely had any because everyone said we should really just get 0-3 months.
  • Both my boys wore newborn sized clothes for about a month and a half to two months. 0-3 months sizes are significantly bigger than NB.
  • I cannot remember how long DS was in newborn clothes for - probably at least a month. I didn't buy lots of them. The size on them said 5-8 pounds. DS was 6 13. But NB clothes were WAY too big on him for a long time. My mom went out of town and bought him more bc nothing fit him. His feet only went to the knees of newborn sleepers. He swam in 0-3 month clothes. I think he even wore preemie clothes for a bit. And he was 20". He wasn't a big baby but he wasn't tiny (husband was 10 lbs. I was 10 weeks early and weighed 4 something).

When my mom was out of town my grandma kept telling her we were wrong, there's no way he wouldn't fit those clothes (obviously bc she's psychic as she hadn't seen him yet). But when mom came home, clothes still didn't fit.
  • My son was 9.7 lbs and 23 inches long, he never came close to newborn clothing. I had a ton but he was too big for them.
