Natural Hair

Hey Ladies,
Besides myself, are there any other natural hair moms-to-be out there? I'm having a tough time taming my mane with all of these new changes coming from LO and I wanted to know if anyone else is experiencing this. Please help!

Re: Natural Hair

  • This may be a stupid question but what do you mean by natural hair? Do you mean you use all natural products? Do you do the "no-poo" shampoo method? Do you not dye your hair while preggo?

  • I have natural hair but I use heat on it. I've basically been blow drying my hair and just putting into a bun for the last few months. I don't plan on having cute hair until it's not 100 degrees outside.

Ahhh good point. I have never dyed my hair and I use cowashes in the place of shampoo. My hair is a mix of 3a/3b, 4a/4b and a section of just random waves in the front. I added an image to help give an idea of what I meant when I said natural hair. Sorry if that was confusing.

I'm working on growing my Rogue streak in in front. In the past I dyed over it all but gave it up shortly before my previous pregnancy. Now I have fully embraced the gray hair but the texture is getting crazy. I've had to experiment a lot with shampoos and have to moisturize way more than before but I'm gradually getting it figured out. I'm just not looking forward to all the postpartum shedding.

*might not be quite what you meant but hormones can definitely do crazy things to your hair.

How so you do that without damaging it or drying it out?

  • @ChiccoBeanz I do a really low heat blow dry or I actually have a set of rollers and I purchased a hooded dryer (best option for less damage but takes the longest). Personally leaving my hair curly for too long causes breakage for me because it always ends up getting tangled.

  • Oh I see thanks for clarifying! I don't have tips for that particular type of hair, mine is silky, thick and kinky wavy. I usually just wash and blow dry straight and maybe straighten or just wear up. But a great shampoo and conditioner can make all the difference!
  • Havana Twists, Marley Braids, Crotchet Braids and other protective styles have been my go-to since May and will be until he's around 4 months. Lol!
  • It depends on what exactly your hair is doing. What is it doing? I'm mostly 4a and b, but just curious.

It does whatever it wants! The front is like wavy, then towards the crown on the left, it is extremely coarse, no matter what I do. On the right side, it isn't as coarse and it kinda coils, but it's weird. Then the back on down, coils, springy coils. I just have so much going on...Idk what to do anymore.

ETA: I'm on youtube looking for some help via tutorials. The salons out here are expensive for natural hair...and most people, although they feel my hair is beautiful ( I get a lot of compliments), many are intimidated to do my hair or charge me crazy extra... *sigh*

I'm a solid 4b, and I've been testing out new things with my hair. I had extensions in for forever (off and on for four years) and took them out in March.

I'm not natural per se, but I get a light relaxer to maintain some texture. I've been air drying for the past month or so, using the LOC (liquid, oil, cream) method, and when completely dry, I flat iron.

My hair feels much softer now, but I still don't think I've found the magic bullet to getting my hair the way I want it.

As a side note, what's really messed up is that the part of my hair that's been braided in my weave is silly smooth and the part that was left out wants to stay frizzy, no matter what I do to it.

    :((
  • @ChiccoBeanz somehow, your description actually makes it sound amazing!

How long is your hair? I wear my hair short now (identical to my profile pic) and have off and on for four years. Because of this, while I have noticed a difference in coil in some parts of my head, it doesn't impact my ease of styling. I bring it up because I find that when I let my hair grow out a bit in pregnancy, the different textures become an issue.

If you are not already a short haired lady, I would say don't rule it out. Getting ready in the am is crazy easy, and there are so many great feminine cuts!
  • @erikaazlet I have like bra strap length hair.

  • I have naturally kinky curly hair. During the first tri it was starting to loosen up, and now it's just 10x curlier. I don't think I fit into the natural hair category, but it's still a struggle. :(
  • I'm a mix of 3b/4a and I just cut that sh*t off lol. With my first I had braids but decided to be truly all natural with twist-outs but with a toddler and a newborn soon coming nobody git time for that! I kept up with it for about 2 months and then one day I snapped and told my hairdresser to cut it all off. It's cropped on the sides, has some length at the top (similar to @erikaazlet but not twisted) and is the perfect length to wash and go.

You could look at this as a way to learn about you hair and practice for your future potential daughters (like I tried to do lol) but since your hair is bra strap length I would say braids is the easiest option.
  • @maiatene I'm terrified to have daughters with my hair ! Lol Idk what I'd do. I think I'm going to hold out until my wedding and straighten it for that, and just for the trial so I can see the chosen stylist's work with my hair. Then after that, just braid it up. I think the less I mess with it, the better it works out for me. I think yesterday's freak out and part of my inspiration for posting this, was my dumb mistake of using Brazilian Tech Keratin Kurl conditioners... it had my hair looking CRAZY. I washed it this morning with some Cantu Butter shampoo, conditioner, leave in and some au natural oil seal...did the loc method, and it reverted back. But I think braided styles will be the easiest for me to do. I was literally in tears yesterday about my hair and Idk what I was doing.

@ChiccoBeanz I'm embarrassed to say when I found out I was having a girl, one of my first thoughts was "I hope she has good hair." And I HATE the term "good hair".

But, I'm 32 and still can barely do my own damn hair. So my poor baby girl is gonna in for it.

I honestly understand what you are saying and where you are coming from. Wanting your daughter to have hair you can manage isn't a bad thing. Everyone's definition of good hair differs. People swear I have good hair, and I love my hair, but it stresses me out because I can't really do it on my own. So I get it. Mom used to keep my hair done as a child...at 27, I am failing lol. I'm asking friends and family who can braid to teach me. I'd like to braid my own here someday, and God willing I have daughters, I'd like to be able to braid theirs as well.

  • Did you all catch one of the best reads that came out last year: Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Loved the way she writes about her natural hair/hair struggles, among other things. Worth picking up if you're short on good reads for your maternity leave...

Also, anytime the term "solid 4b" comes into the conversation, my mind will always go straight to this piece of amazing. Ms. Badu is everything.
  • @ChiccoBeanz totally feel you! if baby is a girl you'll just find some good conditioner and let her be the rock star that she is... and when she's older and you're short on patience she learn that a good hairstylist is just a phone call away lol ;)
  • Im 4c hair texture up until 17 weeks i just styled my hair daily aka a puff. But i definitely noticed a change in my texture. I decided to get a trim and now have it in 'poetic justice braids' but so worried about my edges. I guess its gonna be difficult pregnant or not. There will always be a time we want low maintenance protective styles but in reality theres gonna have to be some compromise when it comes to hair care and healthy hair and pregnancy is just one of those times! Also everyones hair behaves so differently. Guess its just trial and error with the help of youtube..
  • I've just been sporting mini twists. With an 11 year old and 8 year old girl AND a toddler son, i I rarely have time to do much with my own hair. I redo them about every 3 weeks. It looks like it's going to be twists for a while when this one comes along.
  • I have done light relaxers to loosen my curls...but I am tired of them, and haven't had one since I found out I was pregnant. As my hair has grown out I can tell that I like 75% of my natural hair and can handle most of it. My mom is swedish/german and dad is black...anyway I have my mom's thick (number of strands) with the loosened curls from my dad's side. Product is a nightmare my hair is "to white" to absorb any of the hair grease that my dads family uses but much more porous than my moms side so keeping it hydrated is a huge (expensive) task. My hair is mostly fine (strand size) the issue I can't figure out is my crown I have a lot thicker (strand number) there and it is difficult to manage coarse texture in the middle of my head (where male pattern baldness is I have thick number of strands & super kinky texture)...my mom always had her hair thinned there to manage her straight hair but she tried it once on my curly hair as a child and it was a disaster! I actually was looking at trying a dominican salon since they apparently have more experience with mixed hair, but they seem famous for styling so I don't know if it would help. My mom was unhappy with regular salons when I was a child and tried to take me to a couple ethnic ones but they refused to see me because my hair wasn't "ethnic enough." I really want my texture from when I was 3 years old back...any ideas, jk, sort of! Anyone have any ideas for my crown issues? I have contemplated trying brazillian blowout but the chemicals seem worse than a no lye relaxer (and the rumors of damage are incredible).

@satindawl83 I totally get it...it is embrassing how old I was before I could do a ponytail!
